put another way - if the 80yr old /average aged person, that HAD weakened immunities & /or respiratory issues, & died (2%-3% that don't recover) .... if they HAD lived, would they have built up an immunity. Then the ancillary question ... Are there any here on PC that fall in that narrow group who might need to know. And - for that group, are they more or less concerned that the same risk factors apply to regular flu.

When comparing the stats from China and Italy, you might also factor in the difference in greeting styles when friends meet. I guess we're somewhere in between.

Well put. But I was thinking more about the larger "community".
If acquired immunity cuts the total number of cases by.....say 90% over a fairly short time, a year or two, then the "crisis" might be short lived and somewhat self limiting.

Any way you slice it, we are putting a bunch of people in the ground between now and Memorial Day. Buckle up, folks.

true - as >151,000 people die every day .... so, multiplied by the number of days until that holiday or any holiday & we can arrive at the answer. And we can also put this latest flu strain in perspective against all other forms of death.

Our Washington state governor Jay Inslee, just shut restaurants, movie houses, entertainment & art galleries, schools & gatherings of 50 or more (even outdoor)..... with other restrictions if such be needed. He emphasized good health habits, More than the force of law, he said our care for loved ones & our societies must blossom to take the individual & mass measures needed to stop the spread of coronavirus. Over 700 Italians have died of the coronavirus in the last two days alone. Two thousand Italians out of 28,000 infected have died, for a 7+% deathrate. I do not believe (but hope its true) the communist chinese (always small letters) infections are winding down. The truth will be seen if their emission levels increase, indicating that work is no longer disrupted.

Yup, the only choice is how many zeros we want behind that number.

Someone who says, "MOST of those who die from this likely would be dead in the next year or two anyway", can easily call someone else an A hole.

There are a lot of younger people in the world who suffer from weak immune systems.

My father is still alive and kicking at 91. Perhaps if he did catch it and survive, he might not have to worry about reinfection from his great-grandchildren

other than self quarantine, i get a flu shot, wash my hands a lot, don't shake hands, and stay away from known contagious people. and i always practice social distancing during flu season. that's what i love about priuschat :)

Biden said that 150 million people died last year from gun violence alone.

I had been at Sams on Saturday but I just got back from Sams, Walmart, & Food Lion.
Neither Sams nor Walmart had any wheat flour. Dish detergent was pretty much gone too.
The shelves reminded me of an after Christmas clearance sale on steroids. Many large areas of empty or almost empty shelves.

Not the first time that somebody goofed with numbers....
I'm thinking that it was an honest mistake.
Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the "Ignore" mode.
    Be Very Careful!!

A gentleman named Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson tried to use "perspective" against other forms of death one time and he suffered grievously for it.

    Which is a higher number?

People who get shot in Chicago every day?

Or the number that die daily in the US from this virus?

    Just curious...

17 virus deaths as of 3/6 and 80 as of 3/16..(~6.3 daily) ..looks like the virus is going to win!! There is now something out there that may be more scary than living in Chicago!!

In Chicago, 381 people have been shot this year, as of March 10th (~5.44 daily)

For 2016 specifically, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows 37,461 people were killed in 34,436 motor vehicle crashes, an average of 102 per day.

But, day in and day out, driving is still the scariest
