Yeah, my wife just went to our local supermarket to pick up medicine at the pharmacy. She said, nothing left on any shelves. Even the fresh meat section was totally empty. As a normal emergency preparation, our household always has a stockpile of foods and other emergency items to last at least two weeks of isolation. Hopefully, things are restocked by then. Now, just in case the current mass panic goes longer, should we start rationing the use of essential items, like toilet paper, facial tissue, food??? It may be prudent.:cautious:

I love to drive. Since retirement, my driving increased. As of now, I will drive less. I'm already having withdrawal symptoms. No, I'm not coming down with coronavirus. :p

I don't see any problem driving as long as you don't go to a place with a lot of people gathering. With my PRIME, for less than 30 miles trips, I don't even need to stop at a gas station.

While this whole situation is good practice for something worse possibly coming down the pike later.............

I get the distinct impression that the expected death rate from this is MUCH less than the "normal" seasonal flu......which doesn't cause a panic......and might be closer to what happens with a nasty cold strain.

I haven't done any serious searching but it seems that almost nobody is talking about the ACTUAL seriousness of this new "bug".

AND......is there any lingering immunity for those who DO catch it and survive ??

I would like more facts and less emotion.

I went to SAMs club, plenty of TP, no paper towels, no fruit, no yogurt , no shopping carts. Very odd that during a serious viral epidemic that is pretty catchy everyone packs themselves into SAMs club like sardines and buys all the prepackaged dinners and fish but leaves the beef.

As well the alcohol and junk food aisles were overflowing at SAMs 59C98CA1-C3BA-4A2D-B151-28FF46526EEC.jpeg

and I really need to buy a $39 battery for my truck, seriously though, everything was on clearance for some reason.

Went to the dollar store and they are packed to the ceiling with merchandise, grabbed some cheap TP & Mouthwash and called it a day.

I understand that. In case coronavirus social & economic effects plus human impacts become worse than predictions, I think it important that people marshal their resources & quit their frivolous lifestyles immediately. Now, data coming from communist china (always small letters) INDICATE coronavirus effects are reducing. That is good..... if communist chinese (always small letters) information can be believed. I would err on the side of caution, & NOT believe all communist china (always small letters) data.
I marvel that sports events have suddenly stopped, & agree with their decisions. I agree with entertainment & arts decisions to reduce events & limit exposures. My wife's business takes a nasty tumble, with most of her sales, due to galleries, not to internet sales.
Anyhow, my family needs me to limit MY FRIVOLOUS expenditures.

There is a wealth of factual information out there. And among the news stories there is little emotion. Now headlines are written by editors with the idea of grabbing attention. So if you simply scan headlines I understand getting that impression.

    Some links for you:

Coronavirus: Fact vs Fiction - Podcast on CNN Audio

And no expert I have heard has suggested the death rate will be lower than the flu. The estimates range from 5 times more deadly, to 40 times more deadly.

Water treatment plants run with trained workers. 29 work in our local plant. Critical people get sick, what happens? They have contingency plans but who knows.

Water available at Walmart, no paper products or wipes or sanitizers or even liquid soap. Few soups, no rice. Store hours being limited to give workers time to stock. Schools closed. Gas $1.739.

boston mayor shuts down schools, but allows students to go in monday to get their books and belongings.

that may be a tactical error.

he also put restrictions on bars and restaurants. limiting capacity, removing chairs and tables, closing earlier and no lines allowed outside. they were packed to overflowing saturday night.

I think you are confused.......as are most people it seems.

In the last audio clip that your link includes, the doctor says "about 80% of those infected show mild to no symptoms."
He goes on to say that children seem to be less susceptible for some unknown reason.

And I'm pretty sure that the pre-eminent US expert on the subject said at the President's new conference yesterday that the figure is more like 90% or more OF THOSE INFECTED who do not have severe symptoms.

The virus is new to us and we are still learning. So more recent data may show different information.
That said, I will take the information offered at a presidential conference with a large grain of salt.

While accurate fatality data for both regular seasonal flu and new COVID19 are lacking, it is fairly clear from limited available data on hand, COVID19 is at least 10 times more virulent than regular flu for sure. With so much unknown it is far better to be safe than sorry, or dead, IMOH.

Numbers are good but the INTERPRETATION sometimes leaves something to be desired.

    Have a look here:
Coronavirus Mortality Rate (COVID-19) - Worldometer

I just can't shake the feeling that the response is WAY out of proportion to the actual risk for most of the population.

Yes, the fatality rate of 1%-4% for this new COVID19 seems to be where the current data suggest, whereas known cases of seasonal flu fatality have been always around 0.1%. That means COVID19 is 10 to 40 times more deadly than regular flu.
