Just wanted to share with everyone how I fixed this code, because I couldn't find a solution anywhere.

I had this fault code on my 2004 Prius. I know it's a fault with the Evap system, and relates to a similar diagnosis for P0440 and P0446. Changing the Fuel cap with my other 2006 Prius didn't work.

I believe this specific code implies a fault in the Evap VSV solenoid (below the air intake pipe in the bonnet). Toyota wanted £100 for first hour to diagnose, and £80 for a genuine part. I just got a salvaged one off ebay for £15 which fixed the problem. Really easy to replace, just one screw, and you don't even have to remove the air intake pipe.

Basically I tried applying current to the old one with a 9v battery plus crocodile clips and it didn't click open anymore. The replacement does. 100 miles now and engine management light hasn't come back on again.

There are 3 of them, 2 in the back above the fuel tank. I had similar code. Checked that one and it was fine. I ended up checking and replacing one of them that was in the back (it is 2 throw or 3 inlet), the hardest one to get to. I just grabbed any one out of a wrecking yard that worked and had the same inlets, since they are all basically the same.

This is a good thread. The key takeaway is that the trouble codes don't tell you directly what thing to blindly replace; the codes tell you what things need to be checked, and from that you find out in your specific case what to replace. Good stuff.

I was going do this repair after a cheap replacement cap from Amazon didn't work, then I tried putting some saliva after each fill-up and has been working for the last 6 months. Go figure.

I have the same code, but also have p0441 and p0455. I changed the same part, but the part number I have is CP793. They look exactly the same. Its kind of confusing. They are also called the same thing. So I am assuming its the same thing. Not sure why part numbers would be different though.

Since changing the one in the engine didn't rid my code ill change the ones in the back. As this seems to be the most likely cause of p0441 and p0455 if its not the gas cap. I think the ones in the back are different though and have 3 nozzles instead of just 2 like the one in front. As far as I can tell the ones in the back are CP724 or listed as 9091022274. Again, same name, same looking part, different references to part numbers.

    Its really quite confusing....

Following somebody else's fix for an issue only works if you have not only the same trouble codes, but the same underlying reason for those codes to be set.

Sometimes you can have success with guessing, but the more sure-fire way to find out why you have the codes you have is to look those codes up in the repair manual, and read and follow the explanations and troubleshooting steps that go with them.

The number from the older post is for a Toyota part. Your number is for the "same" part made (sold) by an AfterMarket company - Standard Motor Parts. AM parts can be of questionable reliability. Sometimes they can work fine. Sometimes they are bad right out of the box. Sometimes they might work - for awhile.

You can replace more parts if you want. Or you could get a copy of the service manual, and do some testing in order to figure out what's not working. I think all of those codes mention somewhere that you should test the evap purge solenoid valve to see if it: seals (doesn't pass vacuum) when not powered on, and does pass vacuum when powered on.
