do you have a picture of the location you chose? or a more specific location. I see a few options but want to get one for easy access probably underneath the car more likely.

and yes this is for a 2010 prius touring.

There are no bad places to place the can, but some may be better than others. In actual fact
the contents of the line from the PCV valve to the can are not in liquid form but are a vapor.
So there is little to run back down the line to the valve. And the valve would be closed if the engine was not running so it could not go anywhere anyway.
My thinking is that I put the can in so I could empty it often, not once every 6 months. So my
can is up top like many others on the list. Personal choice. The important thing is to have a
can in the system, certainly. Especially in a gen 3.

Hoses for high mounted oil catch cans will likely sag a bit as they come away (horizontally) from the PCV and the intake manifold. I'd think that's not a bad idea, since the interior of the hose can get oily, and then any oil condensate will collect a bit away from the PCV valve.

If you had a long run of hose and for some reason the hoses ran relentlessly up hill away from the OCC, then yeah maybe something bad might happen, though not sure what.

I do think that you need to be cognizant, that you're going from a simple horizontal hose, 6" long at most, to a bit of a plumber's nightmare, a much longer run of hose, with labyrinth filter material. Mainly that besides draining the can it's not a bad idea to completely remove it occasionally and clean it stem-to-stern, especially if you have some sort of brillo pad filter material.

FWIW, my cans (two, in series) are mounted low, on a bracket attached atop the lower/front cross beam.

Just finished installing my oil can. Nice and low and only about a foot or less for each hose. And with the ability to screw it off after removing the air filter compartment. Thanks for the tips. 20200229_195057.jpeg 20200229_195049.jpeg 20200229_195015.jpeg

Why two in series? How often and how much do you get on the second can?

Try mounting the can in plain view in CA and get a smog check / state inspection

For one thing, because I had two (picture me drumming my fingers, looking at the yet unused second one).

Long story why I had two, but thought might as well. I suspect (from a testing/comparison video I watched) that my can is maybe 70% efficient?

So if 100 cc of oil/water is passing through, it would catch 70 cc. And maybe a second one in series, would scavenge an additional 21 cc (70% of 30 cc).

That's so far just a theory, I've only just installed the second can, a month or two back. About mid-April I'll do an oil change and see what they've collected.

Regrettably, until we find a method to filter the EGR system, the catch can or multiples thereof offer the only possible protection to engine self-pollution.

    I would prefer 2 Prius and 1 OCC! :)

Nice Setup, Mendel. Out of curiosity, how many clips do you remove to access them?

I pull the engine underpanel off every 6 months for an oil change, drain the OCC at same time. There's 6 bolts (#2), 11 regular plastic fasteners (#3), and 2 larger ones at the rear (#5). It takes about 5 extra minutes, either removing or reinstalling. The 2 plastic-to-plastic fasteners (#4) just hold the hinged part in place, I don't need to touch those.

I'll be waiting to hear back when you check the second can... I am sure your theory will play out in practice, especially after 6 months of driving.

sorry not the best pictures. I basically installed it on the motor mount, just underneath the PCV valve. there was already a hole for the OC to be securely mounted with a bolt.

so does the newer prius come with an oil can already? or is this still a problem? or has the technology advanced that oil can is no longer needed?
