Using the Primes 120v Charger at 240 Volts, Cost $20 !!!

    So that box has both 120 and 240 volts? Presumably, the bottom female plug is 240 and the top is 120? And you have no warning or indications on the outlet? This very very dangerous, even life-threatening. How would anyone but yourself now that one of the two recepticles is 240 volts? From your previous posts, I learned it is supplied by a single UF 12-3 cable, so there will be no equipment ground available at this service as well. Please either consult or hire a qualified electrician!

    From his posts, it's clear he installed one of these outlets, so it should be perfectly clear which outlet is which. And a 12-3 cable includes a ground wire (it's not counted in the "3"), so there is no reason to assume he didn't wire it correctly. Plus, he said he has GFCI breakers, so....

    Ah, there you are! Just waiting for a moderator. :D

    Yeah, that's pretty scary stuff having 120 & 240 in the same box with the same outlets. And it for sure needs to be 12-3 WITH ground to be safe in the grounding department.

    Jerry, please take a Better Closer Look at this Leviton 5842 receptacle, it is Not the "Same Outlets".

    One is NEMA 6-20R

    and

    One is a NEMA 5-20R

    These are Not interchangeable ....

    Then just plug your 240v teakettle in, you'll be happy you did.

    Contact Leviton and they will hook you up because the Leviton 5842 is a Dual 125v/250v UL listed product.

    My Rob43 adapter works fine with the my Toyota EVSE but I have not yet tried it with my Nissan Leaf EVSE, any reason it would not work also?

    Without inside information from the Leaf community, I can think of plenty of reason why it may not work. And could fry the EVSE. Remember that this adapter is for an off-label use of the Toyota EVSE, and it took users here some special investigation to determine that it would safely work. This adapter will destroy many other products, that is why you can't find it in hardware stores.

    So don't simply assume that it will work on the Leaf side, check with the Leaf aficionados first. Hopefully there is a critical mass of them here too.

    Specifically, it has been determined that the parts in the Toyota EVSE will handle 240V, probably because they use the same design for the 120V US model as they use for the 240V European model, with just a different plug. There have been no reports of failures in the "off -label" use. It just happens to work, but there is no assurance that another manufacturer's 120V EVSE will safely handle 240V. As I recall, the EVSE that came with the 2012-2015 Prius PlugIn was NOT 240V-capable.

    That exact part number Nissan EVSE unit that I recommended you buy will also work well at 240 volts. If it were me, I would use your Toyota EVSE as your main unit & your Nissan as your secondary unit.

    This unfortunately is another internet Myth.

    The Toyota 2012-2015 (Gen 1) EVSE unit works great at 240 volts.

    The Internet Myths I was referring to were discussions here in PriusChat that claimed that some of the components in the 2012-2015 EVSE, like capacitors, were marginal for 240V. Not that they would necessarily blow up, but that they were pushing the limits.

    Are you saying that the person in PriusChat who did an upgrade of the components in the standard EVSE so it could be used at 240V was, ummm, somewhat less than honest?

    Hey Rob, or anyone else here that has built one of these.. I'm building a 20 ft cord that is going to plug in to a 4 prong dryer outlet. In simple terms, is this the correct setup? If so, the 4 prong plug is going to use only 3 wires? Where would the wires go? On the receptacle side, it's labeled green, white and clearly that leaves black as the last option .

    Normally, on a dryer plug like that, the ground (green) wire would go on that top center green terminal. The Neutral (white) would go on the center bottom terminal (closest to the cord). The left and right terminals are for the hot wires (black and red).

    In your case the neutral isn't used. So, put the black and white wires on the left and right terminals. Be sure to put black tape near both ends of the white wire to indicate that it is hot and not neutral!! That leaves the green ground wire for the green ground terminal.
