valve stem seal DIY

    Anyone know the cheapest option to remove both the camshaft and crankshaft rods? I am reading we need a tool sst 09023-38400. What is plan b? Lol

    It's a 14 mm union-nut crowfoot, as you might use to open a brake line that was in the way, something like that.

    Those are available from other sources.

    What exactly is it that you're looking to do, and why? You're using some terms here that aren't real familiar.

    I am replacing valve stem guide seals. Oil is burning after doing other tests and no change yet. Most Prius mechanics in my area have suggested bad valve stem guide seals as a result of bad oil consumption with zero signs of leaks

    You've mentioned the crankshaft a couple times. What's up with that?

    I have to remove the crankshaft and camshaft rods to access the valve springs to replace the seals. My only problem right now is making sure I have all the right tools and parts for when I start removing things. Time consuming and requires a lot of patience but this can be done.

    Since 2006, the Toyota part number for the Union Nut Wrench, 14 mm, has been 09017-1C120, but I wouldn’t pay the list price (¥6,100) for one, even if it were available in the U.S. parts system. Alternatives include the KTC BNS3-14W, Sunex 971014 (at this writing, $5.63 from Home Depot), or PROTO J4914MHFL.

    With the head on and engine on car and instructions manual in hand why Is it so hard to lock timing chain tensioner? I get little slack but I'm scared if I do everything without locking timing chain tensioner I could screw myself when i put everything back together

    Still up right now, lol. It's the plunger I'm trying to push back so I can lock it.

    I have a feeling I may need a second person to turn cam 2 up top to put pressure on chain so i can lock it. Everything else makes sense to me it's just that frikkin plunger I need to lock. Lol

    Can't wait for oil consumption updates when all is said and done. Had you already tried piston soaks using a solvent?

    I will definitely update everyone with my progress. I think I should've read a bit further into the instructions I saw a small detail about swinging the cam left and right to get some more room for the lock lol. I will try it out tonight hoping that does the trick.

    I've tried bg product which I heard was the top notch stuff but turns out it cleaned the valve cover only which lead me to believe it's the valve stem guide seals. Bad catalytic converter code, poor mpg, fried o2 sensor all point to seeping oil through the valve stems. Absolutely nothing else will work for this as I've tried seafoam, bg product and thicker oil. I rent these out a lot so I have two prius burning oil right now 1 qt every 1000 miles. I truly believe this being my 10th prius this will be the valve stem seals.

    Once you slowly remove the tensioner, you can slowly squeeze it in a vise, then lock it.
