    I suppose it's worth repeating- I still don't know if the data I saw on Windy is anything unusual, because their interface doesn't let me see very far into the past.

    Beyond that I can't know how harmful these emission levels actually are- it's really not my field, but some brief wikipoking at it suggests that these readings, high as they may be in comparison to other industrial cities in China and elsewhere, are well below those considered "immediately dangerous to life or health".

    Thus I'm largely ready to dismiss it as nothing of consequence.

    It is likely to be an unrelated fact, but I mention that 1000 human bodies would contain about 140 kilograms of sulfur. Such a fire would be a challenging signal to detect with orbital look-down spectroscopy.

    2020 January 25 was apex of Spring Festival here, with large fireworks discharges in every city. I guess there would have been many sulfurous clouds much larger than 500 kilograms. I heard no reports at the time of satellite detection.

    In terms of corona virus, Jan 25 seems like a very long time ago...

    Yes, I've considered that as well, though to be honest about the worst I could come up with was that somebody used something richer in sulfur (tires, industrial heavy fuel) as accelerant.

    Elsewhere I have read a darker theory that fires had been set with the intent of permanently immobilizing those with weakened respiratory systems to reduce further infection vectors, but as bad as the concentrations are I don't see how this could be.

    Now I don't think it's really anything other than a curiosity that even a locked-down city with a major medical emergency is still capable of serious industrial pollution, and this one time that's okay.

    Yes a very large quantity of contaminated stuff is generated. In this epidemic there are more than 60 thousand people hospitalized across several provinces but with a high concentration in Wuhan. No idea how ancillary wastes are being disposed.

    ==
    People in Wuhan (among other places) are pretty much locked down in houses (apartments). They can go outside briefly every other day to buy supplies. A large outdoor fire would be a very inefficient way to deliver dangerous gases or particles to this fleet of lungs.

    Moving on- have you seen any updates or reports to inform your statistical model?

    There are interesting facts about bats here:

    I know several bat researchers here, some of whom spend time in caves. It's not something I could do :eek:

    "For several days, reports of new confirmed cases have been decreasing. It's not as newsy but it is exactly what one would expect when this beast transitions to logistic form."

    Specifically, Sitrep 16 had 3892 new confirmed cases and 20 had 2653.

    In a few more days there ought to be more to say.
