Brake fluid flush procedure?

Not that I advocate this, mind you, but my Dad's pickup truck did very nicely for 35 years never having had the brake fluid changed.

It had around 45K miles on it and I was thinking of having a thorough brake job done on it........then a neighbor borrowed it and let it run low on oil.

i think I will agree with you since I just had a chat woth Lucious Garage in Sf and they specialize in hybrids for over 10 yrs and said the brake fluid on a 2014 Prius iii (3rd gen) DOES NOT need brake fluid changed unless there is a compelling reason to do so. And same for the power steering fluid. So I asked further what if both fluids discolor and not look original with many miles? Same answer lol

 

My dealer I bought my 07 new from no longer will flush/change brake fluid on the G2's. It has caused too many abs actuators to fail.

My car is at 155,000 miles with original brake fluid and brakes. Brakes never touched. I'm not touching it till it needs brake rebuild.

 

What I saw as result of not changing the brake fluid was the replacement of brake master cylinder - due to rust.
We have the brakefuid lifetime as two years for almost every manufacturer in Hungary.
(I think it also depends on the weather and other circumstances.)
Water in the brake fluid will boil when it gets hot.

 

It never ceases to amaze me that folks think DOT 3/4 magically becomes lifetime fluid in a Prius.

 

Geesh, someone's changed their tune over the years. I've DIY'd the brake fluid change a couple of times now. @NutzAboutBolts video was invaluable. And I seem to recall him saying "you can do it", which is the cornerstone of his videos.

3rd gen Repair Manual has instruction for brake fluid change without techstream. It takes about an hour, no fancy tools needed. Ditto for 4th gen.

3rd and 4th gen instruction attached. 2nd gen does not have a "without techstream" instruction, so I'm not sure.

 

Yesterday I installed two new rear brake calipers and did a full system flush. I did with Techstream.

Techstream adds one procedure you can't do with invalid mode, and that is depressurizing and pressurizing the system several times. At the end of all that I checked for DTCs... and surprise! I had one. Some sensor or actuator needed recalibrating (sorry, didn't take notes, should have). In any case, all I had to do was select the correct procedure in techstream and five minutes later all is well. I am glad I had techstream....

 

I think I got the same not-noted code, using the Techstream bleed. What I did was to perform the (Techstream) bleeding again, without actually opening the bleeders, and there was no code/recalibration showing.
