that is usually how junkyards pull things, coolant hoses are cut engine mounts that don't come undone are cut, but what do you expect for $100 in labor? As long as they don't damage the engine I don't think you can really complain about not getting the rubber hoses and wiring harness in one piece, since you're paying for an engine.

And hopefully the engine is good and they don’t go out of business during the warranty period. I’ve had that happen before.

Replaced the catalytic converter. It was cheap, at only $180 including labor at a muffler shop near me. Other places were quoting me $700-800. Check engine light went off and hasn't came back on. That was 150+ miles ago. Currently at 247,370 miles...

That wasn't "cheap" because it is totally wasted unless you need to get it through an inspection.
With burning oil at the rate you are, the new one will be toast too in a few months.

Hmmm....If the OP is burning something like $60 in gas to drive 1,000 miles, how much does the 3.9 quarts of oil add?

The caddy was cheap, but I'm thinking that pretty soon the 'change engine" light is going to come on....or the 'change owner' light.

That's how @Ragingfit 's 4th gen engine (swapped into Prius v) came, and really there's no harm in the method. Means you have to pull the hose remnants off, that's all. There was plastic caps/plugs in all the open ends.

My cars registration goes out at the end of this month, wouldn't pass inspection with the catalytic converter. I don't think oil played a part in it going bad, and neither did the technician who changed the CAT. It just had 247k miles on it. The technician said it looked good too. Yes there was some stuff on the screen, bit not overly clogged or anything. I thought I snapped a photo of the converter but can't find the picture. I can deal with a oil consumption and still drive, but legally I can't drive my Prius with a P0420 code...

Maybe it didn't but it is highly likely that it DID.

Sometimes the CAT even accumulates enough oil to CATCH FIRE.

There are several ways that your attempt to squeeze the last mile out of this junker can bite you in the butt.

More like $62 for the small one on this prius, they do go higher up in price, but not for this small one

I would say you got ripped off if that was your factory cat, there's a lot of extra platinum in them. every junker I called was offering 300-400.

You could almost use $0.79 a quart sae 30 in that thing at the rate it burns

    Like running a 2 cycle

What kinda shirt do you got? Currently at 271,369 miles now, same condition. Still burns 1qt every 350-400 miles. Seafoam didn't help.

Have you done an engine flush or a piston soak?

If he would run hdeo 0w40 or 5w40 like T6 and then short change the oil it’s additional detergent may start to loosen them up.

kreen and some others do similar

You're kidding, right? T6 burnt at that rate would poison the catalyst enough to make Chernobyl firefighters blush.

but it would have the best hope of releasing the rings and it would not burn at the same rate as ow20
