Hello All, I’m a long time lurker and a first time poster. With a lot of 3rd gen cars now between 150k and 200k, I’m looking for your opinions on preventative changing of the following items and at what mileage? Fuel pump? (Picked up one from a wrecking yard with 40k for 50 dollars from a plug in!) Water pump? ( Just FYI you can order Aisin pumps directly from Japan for 169 plus free express shipping Mine took 2 days from Japan to SoCal) Ebay seller Jdmplanet. Found by looking up Lexus Ct200 parts) Inverted pump? My Prius is a 2012 owned since new with 147k. Only problems has been 2 wheel bearings. egr cleaned Catch can installed Trans axle every 40k About myself I am what u would call a car guy! I do all my own repairs and maintenance? I currently have 8 cars in my stable and believe all cars should last 250k (with a little help) Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks
If you have spare cars to use when one breaks down why would you replace something before it shows signs of degradation or it breaks? Yeah, maybe you would do this before taking a long trip...but within a small radius around home you are just a short Uber trip from home with plenty of other cars. Mike
I actually did the fuel pump on our old 2010. Here's what the filter looked like: What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today???? That was at 200k and I fed our Prius top tier gas. Good luck and keep us posted.
Nice first post, you'll fit right in at Over-maintainers-R-Us I'd do the water pump straight away, as there are accounts of the impeller not "feeling" so great when compared to new at well under 200k miles. With the role it plays in an engine with undeniable head gasket issues, swap that sucker out! Plenty of stand alone P261b accounts here, also. Youtubers "Gasket Masters" appear to be wary of the water pump and they state they do 10-15, 2ZR-FXE head gaskets per week in the Bay Area... I did my 2010's water pump at 142k and would always recommend it by 150k. Inverter pump I'd do by 200k, but they really aren't a huge failure item. Just a good preventative for the long-haul.. Fuel pump can wait for random lean P0171 episodes, imo, as this seems to often be the only clue there's an issue. I do recall at least 1 report of outright failure, tho... But like the inverter pump, no harm in preventative swap of a part which has even a spotty failure history.
Thanks for your reply! I do this with my various other cars (German), but the Prius is the go to if my daughter has a longer commute for school or work so hence the question posted. There would be no Uber here!! I carry both a fuel and water pump in the hideaway so i would repair on the fly! Thanks again!
Thanks for the reply!! I’m about 100% decided to change out the water pump since I have my Aisin sitting and waiting!!! Then I should be good for a another 150k!!! I have had 3 fuel pumps fail over the years in various cars all around 170k! They all just died with no signs of low pressure! I will probably switch out the fuel pump also and save the original as a spare! I have one from a Prius plug in with 50k miles on it ,and probably half of those miles were on battery power. Thanks again!!! Thanks for the reply,!! The fuel pump is from a 2013 Prius plug in with 50k. I figure half of those miles were on battery power!! I have a friend that has owned a 2014 plug in and only fills the tank once every 2 months. He has the perfect commute. I would replace the pump in the old unit and put it in the hideaway as a spare!! Easy 10 minute repair on the fly! Looking at the filter I would say it was ready for a change!! I usually start to question fuel pumps between 150k and 175k ! The Prius design is a lot shorter and stouter(if that’s a word) then your standard majority of pumps in other cars so hence the questioning of longevity. I do have a backup from a 2013 Prius plug in that had 50k on it so I’m assuming about half is under battery power.(You could attest to this guess owning a Prime) So I will most likely swap it out to the backup position and drop in the lower use pump! Thanks again for the response!!!
