    Hi everyone,
My 2005 Prius needs a new hybrid battery. My longtime mechanic (who specializes in hybrids and previously worked for a Toyota dealership), has quoted me $2500 to replace the battery.

The car has only 70K miles on it, but quite a few dings, kid-related interior damage and needs a new paint job. Should I invest the money in a new battery or trade it in for a newer model? Thanks for the advice!
    -Elaine

$2500 for a *NEW* OEM Toyota battery installed isn't that high, and most likely less than the dealer charges (call around though).

Make sure the new HV battery is actually new, and that they also clean the HV battery fan as part of the job.

$1600 for newpriusbatteries.com. ask your hybrid mechanic how much he would charge to make the swap for you

Warranty doesn't help you with consumable items. You still pay out of pocket for those. But on the plus side, the Honda (excluding the Insight) won't have an expensive consumable battery.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. You are paying for it, believe me. But enough of high-jacking LadyElaine's thread. If you want to discuss these issues, start a new thread.

Hyundai, not Honda, provides a lifetime warranty, which if you may read the details I believe notes a % of capacity as one of the replacement criteria...

My wife and I walked into a Kia dealership and I thought being sister companies that they offer the same thing. Salesman said, "Lifetime warranty, what's that?"

    No worries...

Mechanics that leave a dealership and work on their own are highly motivated to do a good job lest you stop using them.

But if you happen to fall in love with one of those Hyundais, I'd say go for it and don't look back!
