What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today????

I got bored with the push button shifter. I ordered this boot off eBay. I also ordered a short piece of M6 threaded rod and an M6 coupling nut. Going for a new look. More pics to follow. Going to top it off with my twisted shifterz drilled and tapped cue ball with the Prius pattern on it.

 

I'm starting to like this Android head unit more and more. You can fit a ton of data on the torque screen, which I have to start up as soon as the car turns on. So I jump in, push the button, my Bluetooth music stream starts up and the gauges come right up! Pretty neat!

There's no particular rhyme or reason to the gauges I selected, I was just scrolling through looking for things I might find useful.

 

Man! You are gonna have to do another interior cam vid on your next track day.

There’s the finished product. The boot is longer then I thought. A lot of it is tucked in the console.

Taking the boot off and just putting the cue ball back on it. Was in a parking lot today and had to hit the brakes pretty hard. Heard the car “beep, beep”. Took a couple of tries to recreate it. With the extension, the ball is heavy enough to swing in the direction of reverse. The car won’t shift to reverse, but it’s not a chance I’m willing to take.

 

I'm told that video joystick balls will fit. Haven't tried it personally, but I'm pretty sure they'd be lighter than the cue ball. Joystick Ball Tops & Bat Tops - Paradise Arcade Shop

 

I think it had more to do with the extension to make the boot look taller that was causing the issue. It took very little effort to move the shifter with the extension on it. I’d almost believe that sneezing on the ball in the right spot would have shifted it.

 

I really want the i-shifter. I’m not picky whether I get version 1 or 2. But I’m not ready to pony up the nearly $600 for it.......yet. LoL

 

It's cool, and innovative, but... any ideas on why it's so much more expensive than the other aftermarket shifters?

On the

Japan shopping sites have it at $385 or so with $85 estimated shipping to the US. There have been a couple pop up on Croooober for around $230 with $75 shipping. But that still doesn’t explain why it’s priced higher then the other shifters. I wonder if lack of demand has made it less profitable, thereby keeping the price high.

 

I added this today. Just a $6 button cover versus a $149 button assembly. Sure it says engine start/stop instead of power, but it’s better then the boring factory button.

I figure the $143 I didn’t spend on the button can be used to do something else to it.

Maybe put it toward the fancy pants i-shifter that I want to put in it. The nice thing about my Prius, is that everything I have done, including the engine swap 18 months ago has funded itself by the money saved on gas over the period I have owned my car.

We were going to trade our 2015 Prius III to a 2020....OOOPPPPSSS! They made it 5 inches longer....will not work in our garage. My wife wanted some safety stuff. Ours already has a CD Player and Navigation and only 33,700 miles....SO we found a custom shop who will install BSM (Blind Spot Monitors) on the side mirrors and Rear Cross traffic sensors on the rear for $899.
SO we have made an appointment next week to get this done.... also....going to the body shop to either spot paint all the knicks and scratches or re-paint if necessary...prob. around $500. for the re-paint, less for the spot paint.. Just also put on new Michelins (from Costco...around $569. with lifetime tire rotations and balance)
She loves the Prius albeit 42 mpg is the average.... We have a friend who has a 2002 with 287,000 miles with no trouble, even has the original batteries....and a trip to Australia where there are many Prius cabs all over 300,000 km on the clock...
We also think the 2015 looks better than the 2020.... She feels after the improvements we have another 3 to 5 years before thinking about a newer car.

 

Ok maybe I'm several months late on posting this but better late than never!



iPhone cameras never seem to be able to capture the color well, but it looks good in person, you'll just have to believe me. Huge thanks to Dylan Doxey for putting this project together for me over the summer. Lot's of meticulous soldering and patience. But the final product looks great, all the LEDs in the dash are now a deep red, and we added the G's start button and an extra LED to the passenger side lock/unlock button (cause DETAILS man). For the vacuum fluorescent display and the overhead mood light we used a red gel film.

I also got to learn a bit about taking the dash apart so I was able to paint some of the trim on my own.

 

The only thing that stands out to me on this one is that 42mpgs is pretty low. Heavy foot? Tires? I am at 190k with a blow head-gasket repair and still see 50-52 mpgs but have seem upwards of 56. (blown head-gasket due to previous owner not doing the proper maintenance)
