EGR & Intake Manifold Clean Results

    While I don't have answers to offer, some clarification is in order. Is this on a Gen3, or is it on the 2007 Touring listed in your profile?

    Some long/skinny brushes are good for doing the small EGR passageways on the intake manifold. Coupled with Oxi soaks. We picked up a 2-pack of steel straw brushes, and I've spirited one away for garage work.

    Also recently picked up a pack of assorted brushes in an automotive place, designed for cleaning some sort of compressor equipment, but looked useful.

    Not sure about the last one, but the first three codes are showing up very regularly with head gasket failure, between cylinders 1 and 2 (going left to right as you stand at the front). How the coolant level in reservoir?

    I used this set of brushes (picked up at one-third the displayed price during holiday sales) for my other EGR parts, though haven't yet done the IM. Brush section 4" long, total length with handle 12", and they reasonably survived the bend in the EGR pipe:

    It's 2011 Prius with 166K mileage on it.

    The head gasket was replaced a week ago and the coolant is on the full level.


    Another update:
    So I went to a dismantling/mechanic shop in Rancho Cordova, CA to do the compression test and one giving more than 90 and the rest is around 60 which is very bad according to them. They also offered different engine+transmission replacement options ranging from $2100 to $3500 with 30K to 120K engines with replacement and warranty of 6months/10K mileage. I'm thinking about choosing 80K mileage for $2400.

    You need to stop throwing parts at this problem and diagnose the root cause. You’re getting misfires and an air/fuel ratio error. The air/fuel ratio problem could be a result of the misfires, so I would ignore it until you solve the misfires.

    It’s true that the first thing I’d try to fix a misfire would be spark plugs and perhaps coils, but you’re still having the problem. It could be a lot of things — you aren’t getting enough fuel or air, or you’re getting unmetered air, the EGR valve isn’t functioning, you aren’t getting enough cylinder compression. You need to rule some things out. I would start by using a scan tool to look at the real-time read outs of the Short Term Fuel Trim and the Long Term Fuel trim. Record the values while the car is suffering through its rough idle, and then when you’re driving at speed. What do you see?

    If you’re +/10 percent, it’s not much of a problem, although +/-5% is better. If you’re overwhelmingly positive, like +25%, it means the fuel pump is being told to squirt in more fuel. If it’s negative, your fuel pump is being told to deliver less fuel. This can give us an idea if you’re running rich or lean.

    A classic reason for rough Prius startup is oil inside the intake manifold from the PCV. But you seem to have a more serious problem. In addition to looking at your fuel trim numbers, I’d test the EGR valve to make sure it’s opening and fully closing. Those are the tests I’d begin with, then we can think a bit more.

    ok everyone, i'm at the end of my rope here with my wife's 2010. getting misfire codes and a rough start when cold.

    here's what i've done so far.
    cleaned the EGR, back to front
    cleaned manifold
    new spark plugs
    new coils
    new PCV valve.

    i'm hoping to take it to get a compression check on Monday, but is there anything else i can do before then? i'm getting misfire codes for all cylinders. it has 180K on the odo, and i'm hoping we can make it work for longer. we've only had it about a year and a half.

    When were the spark plugs last changed, is coolant level low?

    I changed the plugs about a week ago.

    no coolant or oil loss

    Did these problems occur before or after you did all of that work?

    The compression test should be performed with a Toyota Techstream.

    Consider a leak-down test. It is done with the car off, and you don't need any software. It sort-of checks compression, and if anything is leaking will tell you what and where.

    What did the plugs look like?

    Any pics?

    Clean the MAF and throttle body?

    Any other codes other than the misfires?

    here are old vs new spark plugs, EGR pipe, and EGR inlet for the manifold

    throttle body and MAF were surprisingly clean when I took it apart.

    no other codes.

    Not to shabby, glad you got to it. Looks like mine when it was at 90,000 miles and the plugs looks better shape than mine.

    Yeah, it could have been a lot worse. I wish it would have been the cause of my issues though. Less of a headache that way.

    Keep an eye on the coolant level once everything is back in. If level goes down then head gasket is the culprit.

    Coolant level has been constant for the ~200 miles or so that I’ve been keeping an eye on it, with none appearing to get into the oil as the dipstick is normal. The rough start is where my wife’s concern is.

    I’ve got the old one I swapped out. I cleaned the replacement before I installed it though.

    so after letting it sit overnight, i just went out and fired it up. still shaking with ICE startup, but i'm only getting P0302 and P0304 codes, instead of one for each cylinder as before. i'm debating picking up another Duralast ignition coil to put in one of those two cylinders to see if i just got a couple bad ones.
