How to calculate charging cost ?

Not sure if my electric costs are correct, but I basically summed most of the charges that appeared full, on-going and relevant from the above bill. I think I figured it out though, costs me roughly $0.02 per mile on electric and $0.05 per mile on Gas. Please check my numbers and let me know where I am right or wrong!

@Cdgreg if your with RGE the tiered electric program is only for business customers, at least the last time I checked with them. I guess the rational is that the bill is already complicated enough as anyone can see in your bill above and to offer the tiered electric cost for residential customers is not financially viable for RGE, at least not yet.
I'm also not familiar with RGE's electric buy back program for residential customers with Grid connected solar, but I think it was something like 5 cents last time I looked.

You'll see, if you do the calculations every month, like I used to, that RGE changes both it's cost per therm and cost per kilawatt every month. Quite frustrating when estimating next months bill from a meter read.
I've seen cost per kilowatt range from 12 cents to 19 cents per kilowatt. Therms are all over the map, so much so I don't even want to guess what it's at this month or even give a range, it's that bad.

But in RGE's defense, I have to admit in summer when therm price is highest, I turn everything I don't need off, so the dryer and range top are the only things consuming and I usually come in under the minimum fee RGE charges for natural gas, and that may throw off how the therms are calculated on our bill. It's so low I never bothered. Winter is another animal altogether.

Easiest way to calculate electric total cost on the RGE bill is to take the total electric cost as shown above in your bill 28.15 and divide by the kilowatts used ie: if you used 215 kilowatts the simple calc would be
28.15 / 215 = 0.13093023

 

Thank you for all of that information, snipped your response for my last Q. That is a MUCH simpler way to calculate the cost of the electricity lol, and easy enough to go back a year to get a historical perspective month by month. The only thing I'm unsure of on at this point is how many kilowatts I used on that given bill. Is it as simple as 71 killowats? If so, that'd be $28.15 / 71 = $0.39647887 and would actually be heartbreaking since it would be mean EV costs me more than 2x compared to gas! Although I do not know how this compares to other months. Thank you again.

 

If it's RGE the meter reads both last month and this month plus the difference is just above the part you have shown from your bill.
Not sure why you're charged 40 cents / kilowatt. I've never seen above 20 cents on our bill, but I've never used less than 200 kw in a month either.

 

Ahh, I'm on budget billing, aka the option where they bill me the same amount each month so no spikes and valleys over the course of the year. So it's not billing me on use from the previous month by any means. Should still be able to figure a rough cost over the course of a year from previous bills. Thank you!

 

From your bill, it looks like you total use for the billing period was 71kWh, and you were billed $28.71 total for that amount of electricity.

That's $0.396/kWh. WOW, that's a super high rate. Also, if this is a monthly bill, and you used only 71kWh for the entire month? Are you sure this is what you have used for this period?

 

The budget billing service just makes it a bit harder to figure out yearly cost and nearly impossible to figure out monthly rates.

Should I assume you get a meter read every other month or so. The bill will also show estimated meter reads, actual meter reads and customer meter reads (if you ever submit your own meter reads).

 

Thanks for the follow ups and attempts @vvillovv . I went through bills from the past year and charted Actual to Actual over summer and winter months, added up the actual billing amounts, divided the total charged / total KWh from both winter and summer spans and it works out to about .11... per KWh in all cases. So, ultimately, glad to verify it's about two cents cheaper per mile based on current gas prices of $2.70 per gallon in my area!
