Value of my Prius?

That would certainly be a find for somebody, but it's hard to know its true value without having some information about the condition of the High Voltage Battery. I was just in the market and I would say around $11K give or take. You didn't mention the trim level, which will influence value. You will benefit from the low miles. You get dinged a bit because it is nine years old.

Other than the battery, what prevented it from running?

The "history" will be a big minus.......for most buyers.
Check NADA, KBB and Edmunds and expect no more than the "trade in" price......I think.

 

Five years idle would concern me. Tires and brakes should be looked over. And 5 years idle for the hybrid battery.

FWIW, our 2010 was built in August of 2009, and we bought in November 2010, brand-new, about 10 kms on the odo. Dead 12 volt (which dealership replaced) was the only casualty.

But 5 years, is a long stretch. The buyer will likely be someone capable of checking it over thoroughly.

 

KBB and edmunds are good sources as mentioned. I'm not familiar with NADA but i'll check it out.

 

if it's up and running with no codes and a current inspection sticker, i would expect you to get well over the private sale price.

 

How did you verify it was a model 1?

 

I hadn't taken into account the point made by the other posters that the five-year idle period could cause possibly serious hidden issues. And most private party buyers wouldn't appreciate the full scope of what a five-year idle period could cause. "No codes" or "passed inspection" doesn't begin to cut it.

Personally, I'd sell it to a dealer, CarMax, or someone who really understood what the five-year period could mean. To me, the money I would lose would be worth the ease of getting to sleep.

 

Not necessarily true.
At 8 years old, it is WAY past the recommendation for brake fluid service.
And it is generally accepted that tires should not be used past 7 years no matter how good they look.

Neither is really a problem for YOU.......unless you tell a potential buyer that things are "fine" when they really aren't.
