ah, i'm sorry. but the streets are littered with broken gm promises

 

Toyota is establishing battery partners instead, while investing in the vehicle itself. That production plant in Kentucky to build RAV4 is a really big deal, one not to ignore when considering the bigger picture.

 

Hope they hire some of the laid off GM union workers. NAH! They will hire new "indentured servants" under the LG Chem management.

 

oh i'm optimistic. that gm will screw up again

maybe after theyre building ev's, and they decide no one wants them, they'll sell the factory to elon for cheap

 

Who cares about the battery factory...
The big news is right at the end of the piece...

"GM has announced plans to continue to expand its all-electric offerings, including EVs from Cadillac and “an all-new battery-electric truck coming in the fall of 2021.”.

Gee, I hope it has sledgehammer resistant metal and unbreakable windows!

Well, they never built the Edsel, but other than that......

 

*shrug* could be good. I don't know much about GM's operation, never owned one of their cars. I've long had the sense that they're building their future overseas.

I live a few minutes away from one of their earliest factories. I think it's been 90 years since GM used it, but local people still talk about how they cut and ran once they were asked to shoulder some of their own growth-related expenses.

The world did not become a better place with the invention of "marketing departments".

 

That logic is exactly what contributes to the problem of Innovator's Dilemma... which is the very problem Volt died from. The spin online about that not being the case is good reading too... so much damage-control effort for such an obvious mistake. GM chose to focus on enthusiasts, asking them what they wanted... rather than finding out what mainstream consumers actually needed. That created a highly specialized gen-1 Volt. They repeated the same mistake for gen-2 Volt. It became such a much praised niche, but actual sales were terrible.

Thinking a want is what they "need" is a very real issue There was so much justification in the past for Volt, based on marketing, not the actual recognition of necessity. True requirements are a solid measure. People turn a blind-eye to that data.

 

Like they did for NiMH batteries. In 2009, Toyota owned 60% of Primearth EV, and that was before Panasonic reduced their share in order to acquire Sanyo.

Besides, this announcement, and what Tesla has, are partnerships with a battery company. The title of @hill's link said GM and LG to partner.

In defense of the ovoid, Kammback, split rear window prerunner, what Pontiac created, and everyone raved about, would have started the Crossover craze years sooner.


GM screwed up a sure hit, it was only getting built because of the response on the show circuit, when they insisted Pontiac use an existing minivan platform for the production version. The tall firewall couldn't be altered, and that completely shifted the Aztek profile to that of a gen 2 Prius.

And Toyota is jealous more people aren't buying their heavier and thirstier land barges.

GM can make good products. Ford and Ram would be selling more trucks if they couldn't. The Volt seemed to be well made, and the gen2 had some big improvements. GM just seems to get focused on what makes money now over future investment. Hopefully, this partnership means that is changing.
