    Good evening,

We have owned a toyota prius for over 12 or so years ( 4 different models ) We just traded or 2018 for the 2020 toyota prius prime for no good reason other than color. lol

We brough the car home about 2 months ago, about 2 weeks ago my wife was driving it and the main display ( sorry no technical terms, the display between the driver and passenger seat) just turned off. It stay off for about 20-30 seconds and then turned back on. It acted like the car powered down and powered up (meaning the display went thought the normal steps when you first turn your car on. She said it didnt affect anythign else. It only happened the one time so we left it at that. Today I was bring in the kiddos to school it happened topw times to me.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix? Or a direction i can tell the Toyota mechanic to start?

If this has been posted in the past, pls point me in the direction of that thread, I was unable to find anything remotely close to my situation. Yeah.. I know its under warranty but living 2 hours from the dealer I want to tell them a little more of a technical problem / reason for my call.

Thanks to you all and hope you all had a holiday / Thanksgiving.

The dealer will probably want to know what app/apps were running at the time. That's often a big clue.

I'm not saying you and she did what I've done, but I have accidentally done it. If you inadvertently touch the audio power button for more than about a second, it will reboot the display.

In the general sense, yes. The GPS route guidance is an app. The climate control is an app. Sound is an app. It's all run by software these days and each function is an application that connects the user to the hardware. Just like the telephone function in a smartphone is actually an app.

My 2020 reboots much more often than my 2017 did. I figured Toyota is working on a software update to correct this. See the recent string under the Prime Care, Maintenance and Troubleshooting Area. I was going to mention it to my dealer during my first service but I want to make sure that they do not charge me if they cannot reproduce the problem as it only happens every week or so.

I had my display reboot at odd times too once. Turned out to be a power cable dropping down across the power button from my dashcam triggering the touch sensitive button. You know, I love my car, but all this touch sensitive BS on cars drives me bonkers. I'd but a car with regular buttons and knobs over a damn touch screen any day, but I don't see manufacturers being smart about whats safest (non distracting) and most reliable, over fancy and frilly.

All it takes is for one manufacturer to catch on, that this (tactile, ergonomic, easy to use by touch alone) might be a thing, and the race would be on. Too, it would be an almost comedic about-face, lol.

I'd assume their motivation for going to touch screens for everything under-the-sun, even critical controls, is $'s.

My display doesn’t reboot IT FREEZES. Only way to get it back is to turn off/restart car. Dealer did hard reset but it didn’t fix problem. Please help - I think this is unsafe to drive when these functions are unusable.

Welcome, Gladys. I don't see how we can fix it over the internet, even though there are lots of really smart people here on PC. You'll have to keep pestering the dealer till they do their job. The car is under warranty, isn't it? If so they are required to honor the warranty.

There are some people who keep the large screen turned off. It doesn't do many things that can't also be done with the controls on the steering wheel, so I wouldn't call it unsafe. But they do need to fix it all the same.

If you are talking about 11.6" screen not the main display on the dash, then don't worry about safety. All the information on the 11.6" screen is not needed to drive the car. See the comment from @jerrymildred. I keep my 11.6" screen off most of the time. Heck, I sometimes cover the screen with dark shade cloth so I don't get glare from the screen. Only time I have to have the screen on is when I need to use navi (less than a few times a year) and when I have to turn off the climate control or change the air direction manually. I can turn on the climate control and change fan speed or temperature setting without the large screen using only wheel buttons, but not to turn off or change air direction. I can also control music and radio source from steering wheel.

That being said, if you are having a problem with the display freezing up, take it back to the dealer to get it fixed while it is under warranty as already commented.

This just started happening on my 2020 LE this week. The display was on the default startup screen that shows the energy monitor, audio, etc. The radio was on XM. The display just goes black ( I assume it shut off ) and the radio goes silent during this time. Happened twice this week on short trips around town. ~500 miles on the car.

Is there a hard reset sequence?

Toyota has a long way to go with technology, luckily my screen has only done it a couple of times on a 2018.
