How much smaller is the cargo area in the Prime than my late, lamented 2010 Prius? I could just barely get my fatbike in my 2010. If it's just a little headroom at the back, it probably wouldn't be a problem.

It's bigger in floor-area, smaller in height.

Not sure about that. I have Gen 3 cargo carpet mat in my Prime that is folded up at the top edges and the flaps on each side. The bottom is flush with the edge of the floor near the door.

So it’s shorter in length, about the same in width (except the carved out areas which are smaller to fit the charging outlet and cables on the passenger side).

Oh, sorry, I was thinking compared to gen 2 not gen 3.

    Great way to compare!!

My wife has a gen 2, so I can try the same test as Tideland did when I get a chance. Both cars full of stuff in the back now and my "do this first" list is annoyingly large right now.

I had a Gen 2 and just got a Prime. One of the main reason I chose the Prime over a couple other PHV is the width of the trunk. I carry my golf bag back there so I need it to be able to lay across with my clubs inside, and Prius is the only one that doesn't have battery installed in the side of the trunk so I can get the full width.
it's obvious that the floor is much higher than that on the gen 2, I was surprised that it's actually wider. On the gen 2, my bag laid across perfectly but had to reach into the cubby hole on both sides. On the prime, I only have to stick the club end into the left side hole, and the bottom of the bag doesn't reach the hole on the right side.

I'm almost convinced to replace my 2012 Prius with a 2020 Prime. This thread is helping allay my fears about the limited cargo space, but I just want to confirm -- is the space in the 2020 reduced due to the addition of the 5th seat, or is it essentially the same as the pictures in this thread?

AFAIK, the cargo space is unchanged in all the model years of PRIME 2017-2020. 5th rear seat available in 2020 model PRIME is just conversion of the center console into a middle seat with addition of a seat-belt, thus no change in space available for cargo.

First post here - but I'm on the precipice of buying a Prime. Love the car. The rear cargo room does worry me a slight bit because I do a lot of diving up here on the Canadian side of the PNW. Does anyone here dive with their Prime? Ideally I'd need room for two people with two sets of gear - 4 tanks, two full kits, camera gear, etc.

I looks like it should all fit (with one seat laid down) - but it'd be tight.

Welcome! I don't dive, but having lived for 9 years on a Caribbean island, I'm pretty familiar with the bulkiness you're referring to. It should handle it easily, at least with a seat folded down. Maybe the dealer would let you test fit the stuff if you promise not to scratch the car.

With only two people, just fold down both seats.

Newbie here. Have not purchased the car yet but you guys make me feel confident my 2 person camping gears will fit well in the prius prime.

The key word here is "2 person". As long as you are not taking family camping with two adults + two kids and a dog, PRIME should work fine.

2 adults and a dog no kids yet. May be plug-in RAV4 in the future when the family grows.

How big is your dog? If he/she takes entire rear seats area, you may have a problem.

She is 6-months old at 18 lbs now. A mid-sized dog will grow to max 30 lbs

Would you have to keep the rear seats up for your dog? If so, you cargo capacity is limited for larger bulky camping items. I have never done comping with PRIME, and it has been a long time since our last camping trip we took on midsize SUV, so I don't know if the size of camping items has gotten small enough over the years.

We do keep the seats up for the dog. Does the rear seat fold all together or I can fold only half at a time?

It is a 60/40 split seat. You can fold down either 40% side or 60% side.
