Apologies for starting a new thread (yes, I know, another one...), but for my 2013 Prius, it, unfortunately, did not come with any mechanical key, and instead came with a blank (the previous owner claims he lost the only fob and had to get an absolute new key fob remote and blank key which he never tried to cut out). Anywho, I asked the local dealership if they can cut out the key based on the VIN, but they claimed due to legal reasons they cannot and instead said I would have to buy a brand new key remote fob that includes the mechanical key for nearly $600 (!!!!!!????!!!!???!!!). I already have the blanks and have two key remote fobs, I just need the mechanical keys cut, but unfortunately, do not have a regular mechanic key that can be used as a guide. Does anyone know if there is a much cheaper way to go about this, or is getting a brand new key fob remote the only way to go about this?
That doesn’t make much sense. Catalog Figure 67-12, Lock Cylinder Set, shows that the mechanical keys and the remote (electrical key transmitter sub-assembly) are sold separately. Dealers can definitely look up key codes in Toyota’s Technical Information System (TIS), as can certain independent locksmiths. Toyota requires some procedural controls over this—the dealer has to check your identification and the vehicle’s registration documents, and a manager has to approve the request—and perhaps the dealer you asked has decided that this is too much effort, or they don’t want the liability. I suppose there could also be a state or local law that restricts their activities. You could try another dealer or a locksmith, or buy a new lock cylinder set, which supposedly comes with two matching keys, and do the installation yourself. The part number is 69005-47120, list price $195.91, available online for $135 plus shipping and tax.
