5th Generation Prius

Absolutely. I like my first Prius for a lot of things, but the day I trade it in I will be SO GLAD to be rid of the shit-tastic interior storage design. I'm done with it, and will be looking for a wrecking yard's Gen4 to pull a center console out of to try to mod it to get some semblance of useful storage back.

 

That's certainly possible, but it's also true that if someone drives their Gen III Prius @ 130 kM/h they are a lot more likely to see 6L/10 kM rather than 4.2L.

I think 14L/100 would be about 17 mpg rather than 10-11 (using the formula L/100 kM = 241/mpg), and yes, if you drive all the time in a congested city, especially with a lead foot, that's what you'd likely get - or worse.

My driving routine is a mix of interstate, highway, mountain, suburbia, and cities, including Washington DC. The good mpg is mostly due to my Prius-inspired driving style.

Some help with the mpg's comes from Earl's fancy start-stop tech and its aluminum body. The bed cap does add a couple of hundred of pounds of weight, but smoothens the air flow a little as well.

 

I like this one, perhaps the same, but can't quite get my head around the above method:

To convert from liters per 100 km to miles per gallon (US), or vice versa: divide the initial value into 235.2.

 

I can't remember how I arrived to the 240-"ish" factor for the US gallon, but it's close enough to Mr. Internet's 235.2something, so we are good I guess (for the imperial gallon, I use 280). A little easier to do division in one's head with round numbers

 

I think yours is the same method: dividing either value into "a number", and yeah it works either way. I arrived at 235.2 by just distilling the various conversions down. Namely: liters to US gallons, and miles to kilometers.

Whatever they do I hope they do not compromise the interior space I do not want a lower roofline at all. I would prefer a more station wagon shape actually like the Prius V but perhaps not quite that large.
Any idea how many Priuses are used for Uber drivers? That's what I do for a living and I sure as hell don't want to lower roofline. If they go that route then I'll be buying something else.
If you want one that's more CUV than just buy the RAV4. There's not that much difference in price
and I sure as hell don't want all of them to be all wheel drive the whole country doesn't need all wheel drive and it does cost some fuel economy again if you want all wheel drive get the RAV4.
A touch more ground clearance would be nice. I scrape a little bit in my second gen now I know the 4th gen is a little bit lower. I'd probably be willing to sacrifice a small amount of gas mileage for a little bit more ground clearance.
I do wish they would make the external styling not quite so weird looking. However I have found with the 4th gen that the pearlescent white color definitely makes the car look better at least to my eye. It seems to hide some of the bad shapes, and accentuate some of the more interesting points..

I actually prefer the Pre 2019 styling. To me all they did was make the car more boring and not really eliminate any of the things that were kind of weird looking.

I actually kind of liked the older tail lights that had that long vertical line you definitely recognized the car from a distance.

When PRIUS v and PRIUS Gen 3 were both available, TAXI drivers HERE were moving more and more to PRIUS v. Ours were 7 seaters, but the couple I saw close up had a cargo barrier and the back seat folded up permanently. Huge cargo area. And roof height.

I'm yet to see a Gen 4 PRIUS TAXI here - but not many PRIUS are sold here now. Lots of PRIUS vs and Camry Hybrid taxis now, the occasional Gen 3 still.

 

I had a Gen2 for 12 years. Now have an MX5 which I love and a RAV4 which is boring me to death.

Only way I don't go the Tesla way is a $30 K, AWD Prius prime that has fast charging, a nicer interior, and provides 35-40 miles of plug-in range.

Only reason I haven't bought the tesla is range anxiety, but that car is much more fun and has fewer moving parts.

That styling is a major factor in why Prius sales took a nosedive when it arrived. Way too radical and, in my humble opinion, ugly.

 

I would *really* like to see a spare tire. I recently wrote a letter to Toyota about the lack of a spare tire on the Prius.

The thought of my wife or daughter driving the car at night having to deal with getting the car towed and whatnot which would take hours, makes me sick. Assuming they have cell service and can even call someone. In the 7-8 years and 220,000 miles I have on my 2012 Prius, I have installed the spare twice and plugged 6-8 punctures due to nails/screws. I can literally have the spare on in 5-6 minutes and be on my way.

I see that the Rav4 Hybrid has both AWD and a spare tire. That might be the direction I have to go when replacement time comes.

Please Toyota, see the wisdom in having a spare tire for those dark nights with no cell service in the middle of no-where.

 

gen4 has a spare tire in certain trims, and room for one in others. perhaps you are reading about prime?

 

I was just looking on Toyota.com: looks like there's 3 (non AWD) levels, the "eco", base and loaded level with 17" and various extras. The base only has a spare. Which has me scratching my head: you can always count on toyota for bonehead levels setup. As far as I know it's NOT trivial to retrofit a spare that fits under the hatch floor in the levels sold without spare, due to different hatch floor level, styrofoam fill pieces under the floor and so on. Something like $1500 to make it completely the base.

For example, if you want 3 door touch-to-unlock and a spare, you're SOL.

 

Only the LE front wheel drive has a spare. None of the others have one - ECO, XLE, AWD-e, Prime, etc. I actually went and looked over a 2020 XLE AWD-e the other weekend. There is a crap load of room for a spare if Toyota wanted to put one there. Especially if they did a front-to-rear muffler off to the right like they did on the Gen3's. It is amazing how much room there is around the muffler and whatnot. If people would start complaining, Toyota would put one in there. You won't realize what a bad idea it is until you get stranded in the middle of the night with no cell service.

 

And of course they plunked the rear wheel drive motor square in the middle of the spare tire well. Engineering at it's finest...

 

my mistake,
i was thinking of the earlier models, and totally forgot the 4 wheel drive.

i think there were 3 trims with a spare when it was introduced.
