Sorry to hear the misfortune. Yeah, replacing that touch screen is going to be very costly. I don't know how much you can save by DIY, since the parts is what is so expensive. I remember a thread with a video on how to remove the head unit from PRIME, but can't find it.

I did find this video showing how to remove the dash panel and head unit along with the screen to access the controller, but I don't know if it helps. Good luck and keep us posted.

 

You can almost certainly buy that screen and touch digitizer seperately, but not from Toyota. The challenge will be figuring out the part interchange. A part like that typically costs less than $150.

I’ve seen many OEM automotive touchscreen replacements sold on Alibaba. They are only occasionally identified by fit application, usually described only by size and connection type. So it wouldn’t be an easy search, and might require some disassembly of your existing unit to gain clues.

But if it saves you the better part of $6,150? Just food for thought...

 

first things first, i recommend therapy and meds to get that rage under control.
or a higher paying job so you can afford to fix the mess(es) you make..

I've had mine over a couple years now, same screen, and it's taken a beating.. cracking the screen with a punch is certainly not a trivial task, you must have gone to town on it.. that's the concerning part.

 

A used 11.6" head unit/screen should be available from an older salvage Prius. The electronics in the head unit my be different but the screen should be same and probably could be swapped with the 2020 Prius head unit. $6000 is a ridiculous price to pay for a replacement.

I think that even without an 11" screen, I would see a very large message indicating that it's time to replace your dealer.

Meanwhile.....
I would do exactly nothing for 6-12 months other than buy a phone mount or old school GPS for navigating and switch to decaf.

I'd also start a replacement fund for the head unit and wait for more people to have more trouble with their infotainment systems so that there will be more demand for screen replacements.

As a wiser person than myself has already pointed out, he digitizer screen is probably a $100-$200 part, and it's going to be a lot easier to replace than an iPhone screen because the infotainment system doesn't have to be IP68 water and dust resistant - which means it's "probably" held in place with snap fit bezels and/or screws.
Once you get the head unit out of the car, even an underemployed college grad will be able to replace it, no sweat....and who knows?
Somebody might have actually thought that an 11" pane of glass in a CAR might need to be replaced.

You might not have to remove the head unit to replace the screen.


Oh....
And don't buy a Tesla.

 

One problem is that on PRIME there is no way to turn off HVAC system without the main screen digitizer functioning. You can turn on and control some of HVAC functions using MID and wheel switches, but no way to turn it OFF.

 

could you imagine this dude with a Tesla Model 3 where every aspect of the car is on the screen?!

It looks like they only work on units through 2009, but maybe they would like to expand to newer stuff. Definitely worth asking them.

 

At least this is a lower price, but not sure its for a 2020, use vin to make sure it fits.

Also, the damage should be covered by your comprehensive part of insurance if you have it, on a lease you should.

And at worse, are you sure it wasn't damaged by vandalism? Wink Wink

 

If it makes you feel better. That's the same price Toyota quoted me for a replacement nav unit in my 2010 Prius about 6mos ago. The dealer also offered a refurb for $2000. I opted for one off Ebay for $500 and put it in myself.

Did they change this for 2020? My 2018 has an OFF button.

 

On your MID with wheel buttons? I am talking about turning off HVAC function on my 2017 PRIME Premium without using 11.6 inch display. One option is to use voice command, but my experience has been that is even more troublesome than using the 11.6 inch display.

EDIT: Oh, I see. Maybe on PLUS (or LE) trim with 7" display, there is actual physical OFF button.

 

I think perhaps only the base model is arranged this way.

Hi The_Ape, when you replaced your center display did you need to have it reprogrammed? or was it just plug n' play?
