What is the proper way to "borrow" someone's power when you visit? If someone came to my house with a plug in, I would gladly let them plug in, and would probably refuse any money for it, OTOH, I would NEVER beg for free power. How do people handle this potentially awkward 21st century social dilemma? (I first posted this on the FB page, and had to admit I am an donkey for asking for free power. I'd just like to have a nice civil discussion of this issue.)
Get a meter and pay for what you take. Is that too complicated? Would you ever ask a friend for free gasoline? Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
With a PHEV, I wouldn't ask to plug in. There could be a extreme edge case, meaning if I was going to run out of gas and a charge would get me to the gas station, yes I would ask. That really isnt any different then asking for a ride to fill a gas can, it's something a friend would do. Now if we were talking a EV it's a little different. The same situation where I was going to run out before reaching a charging point, yes I would ask. Also if I was staying over night, we had been using my car to run around all day, something like that, yes I would ask. In my opinion, plugging in at a friends house isn't going to get you much of a charge unless you will be there overnight. It wouldn't be worth the hassle for me. A PHEV just really doesnt need it, and a EV would take forever to charge enough to make it worth it (unless said friend had a L2 charger).
Meh, depends on your friends, I just plug in. What's the cost? $0.60 max (0.11/kWh here)? It's polite to ask, but my friends are very close, we don't knock, just walk in when we're expected. YMMV.
It all depends on how close you are and how comfortable you feel using their utility either for free or even for money. Unless that is the emergency situation that your PHEV is out of gas and need juice to run to a gas station or BEV without enough charge left to get to the nearest charge station. The situation may be easier to ask for a plug if that friend happens to be a fellow PHEV or BEV owner.
Seems straight forward. Just ask politely and accept their decision either way. "Hey, would it be possible to plug in and charge my car while I'm here? It costs about $0.60 to charge". If I have a guest over I'm likely spending more than $0.60 on them, just in terms of offering food and drink. I imagine most people would say yes to this without much thought, but if they say no (they might be skeptical of the cost, or just uncomfortable with it), don't push it.
i don't understand why you would. no dilemma unless you create one if you had an i3 with range extender, and didn't have enough juice or petrol, would you ask for some petrol?
Depends on the location, but at the highest state average (~$0.35/kWh for Hawaii), a full charge for a Prime comes out to a whopping.......$2.25. I think in most states/situations its going to be <$1 in electricity. Personally, I'd still offer to pay. However, I wouldn't feel bad if I didn't or they refused to accept the money.
