Any luck slowing oil burning with a stop leak (lucas, blue devil, bars, etc.)

I think I get it now.

Some people can't get over the myth that ALL grades of synthetic oil is somehow thinner than conventional oil.
    THAT IS A MYTH.

Now......requiring an oil that is "thin as water" when the car is new might mean that the oil usage increases faster as the miles pile up.......if you keep using it regardless of the total miles on the engine.

It might APPEAR that "synthetic oil" is the cause.......but the required viscosity is available ONLY in a synthetic......so that is faulty logic.

The term "conflation" comes to mind.

Didn't even know the word a few years back; now I can't get enough of it. :)

this is my valve train after 270k of synthetic oil, no sludge at all, no build up, plenty of detergents in the oil working properly. It's a design problem with the rings, not the oil. [IMG]

Been really slacking on this "experiment" and have probably done a couple more oil changes without updating.
Last 2 changes did not use the oil treatment and just went with cheapest $25 out-the-door oil change.

I checked my oil today at 2100 miles from the oil change. A speck of dark oil on the very edge of the dipstick lol. I poured quite a bit of oil out of a gallon jug laying around. Probably somewhere between 2.5 and 3 quarts would be my guess?

I'm approaching 220k miles I don't even look at the odometer I always have the trip set to display but I think I'm somewhere around 217k miles still runs flawless just eats oil.

My conclusion is with the oil treatment I will be very low at 3k miles. Without the oil treatment I'm very low at 2k miles. So makes a modest improvement but still kinda pointless.

    OK.....so I gotta ask:
Rather than trying to "concoct" your own blend, why not do one or two changes with a "high mileage" type of oil......that the oil company has engineered for just that situation ??

Had mine up at a dealership to diagnose when the battery was hosed, and overheard a mechanic telling a customer that you should only be worried if it's greater than 1qt every 1k.

That dealer also told me that my engine was shot, 40k miles ago, so MMV.

Toyota had oil control ring issues with some of their engines
It’s a widespread problem and has been well documented for a decade now

Many people have tried all kinds of different fixes.
The marvel mystery oil piston soak
Done a few times. And over a few days...
Can slow it down a little

But only real fix is new rings.

Quick update. Began thread with 205k miles. It now has about 227k miles and I really stopped paying too much attention and have been doing the cheapest $25 5W30 oil changes WITHOUT an additive.

I recently checked dipstick 2000 miles after change. Nothing on it! Took out a 1 gallon jug and dumped most of it in to get back to full. My estimate at least 3 quarts low just 2k after changing oil! And still running like a champ with just a quart. So now I have to monitor the situation closely even though I tend to get a little lazier going into winter with checking.

This Prius is cleaner and better-running than 90% in that sub $5000 range but I think I'd struggle to get about $2800 and it's worth more to me than that so I'll just continue to drive it:

We just got the first two thousand miles on a 2004 that was burning a quart every 700 miles. We demoed the BG engine flush kit (2 gallons of chemicals, drain oil, run car on a gallon of nastiness, then drain again, run on rinse agent, then change oil) and the car has gone 2000 miles no oil burning.

My personal car is a 2004 and burned a quart every 900 miles. 30,000 miles of 5w30 non synthetic with 1 quart of non synthetic ATF fixed it.

We are finding it can be fixed without ring replacement by cleaning. YMMV.....

So final update I think I'm losing at least 3 quarts in 2500 miles. Motor still runs great just burns like crazy (very close to 230k miles).

Been lazy to check and last night, at about 2500 miles driven, very briefly when driving the red triangle flicked on/off and info screen said problem (but this was so quick if you blinked you would have missed it).

Immediately checked oil and nothing on dipstick added about 4 quarts and this was about 2500-2600 miles after last change.....Was probably running (like a dream) with a half to 1 quart.

So now I'm going to add every 1500-2000 miles and since the oil will be changing itself I'll probably go 5 or 6k miles before changing at a shop because I'll be adding multiple times in between.

That really sounds logical, doesn't it ?
    But it is false logic.

Changing the oil does two things: It gets the old oil and sludge OUT and get fresh oil IN.
With your proposal, the sludge has nowhere to go so it continues to accumulate in the engine.
And sludged up rings likely is a major contributor to your problem in the first place.

The ONLY way your plan makes any sense is if you are going to run it into the ground and when the engine finally blows up, junk it.
It might not be that long.

starts with 4 quarts and 2-3 will disappear and a new 2-3 will go in. So going every 5k miles instead of 3k makes decent sense to me.

My mechanic will charge $400 to swap the motor. As seen in pics above it is in $5000-$5500 condition but due to the reading on the odometer (+200k) it is only worth 2.5k --- so yes, I will continue to "run it into the ground".

Used low mileage motors on gen 2 priuses sell for $200 to $250 so I would never junk such a beautiful car over a $600 to $650 repair (engine replacement).

It costs $500 just for Michellin tires so I find it so amusing when people freak out over very simple (and cheap) repairs like the hybrid battery going bad (also a $500 repair buying used) or an engine going bad....

Would you say you go longer in between adding oil? Currently 1qt every 1200 miles just looking to get more time with the oil.
