Here's some excerpts from the big book, a little easier to handle. Bit of a hodgepodge, might be some duplication.

I'm a bit Rusty at putting engine back in so I am thankful for the help.

At one time all this work would have been just another day. Usually still drunk from night before.

Clean pcv valve often. I suspect pcv valve on alot of these cars are getting stuck open allowing oil to get by leading people to think they need oil catch.

I didn't think of myself it untill yesterday.

Not sure if I showed reason for this all. So here it is again if I did already.
This job was necessary because of this fail

The head gasket failed between combustion chamber and coolant.

The sealer is gone and the Piston has tell tail signs of being too clean since it was getting steam cleaned for probably 400 miles.

Had to check connecting rods for straightness since the engine seemed like it might have been getting hydrolock at srartup.

Rods look good head and block measured within tolerance. IMG_20191017_111555__01__01.jpeg

Yeah I used that supposed engine cleaner gas treatment.
Ah I don't think it did much at all.

There are "3" angles on the valve (and seat I believe???).
Something to do with how the air/fuel flows. If it doesn't matter, why pay for the equipment and time
to do it? Does it make a HUGE difference? I don't know.
Do you HAVE to do it? My personal opinion, no. SHOULD you do it, correctly, up to the individual.
I used a drill on the valves when I did them on my VW's. Drove them over 100,000 miles without a problem.
    And the engine was smooth.
I also used the wire wheel on a grinder to clean all the carbon off. And on the shaft, and the top where the clips
go to hold the springs on. I forget what they're called. Again, never a problem. I was never close to the stone.
It reduces the cleaning time by at least 90%! Never had a damages valve. They are super hard.
It takes valve grinding compound to seat them in, which has diamond chips in them. So a wired wheel, that flexes,
is not going to hurt them. I supposed if you left it on long enough and hard enough you could.
But you are just cleaning off the carbon.

I guess it's like the oil drain plug seal. SHOULD you change it EVERY time? Yes. But if you don't, will it be a problem?
It has NOT for me. I have always reused mine several times, without leaking.
I change them on the Prius because I got them for 10 cents a piece, and they fall off.
The first time though, I reused it. It was not leaking when I did the first oil drain.

A lot of people don't change there oil filter. Some change the oil at 5000 miles but change the filter at 10,000.

It is YOUR car. Do the work anyway YOU want to do it. Based on YOUR experience. It doesn't matter what anyone
    else says. (y)

Maybe install the valve like a drill in a drill press (with masking tape on the stem, spin it and carefully clean with brass brushes.

Since it's been 30 years since I was at automotive school my memory isn't too fresh with experience. But I truly believe they said don't clean top side of valve that way. And I believe it was becouse of possiable damage yo sealing surface.

I believe they said you can clean compression side of valve to hearts content .

The surface discoloration on top of valve between edge of sealing surface and edge of sliding surface counts for a big 0 zero nada nothing. So makeing it shiny again is just too dangerous without proper valve milling machine.

I would say a defect. Not that it's a problem on the bottom side.
If it had broken off I think it would have rattled around the head and cylinder and left marks,
or possible more damage. And the valve wouldn't be very safe....
