What is your DTE after fill-up?

Over two years of driving PRIME, I have filled the tank total of 48 times so far. I have kept accurate record of gallons filled, cost, miles driven, mpg displayed in between fill-ups. As you know with EV drive included in the distance, the displayed or calculated mpg has no meaning, unless you did all of the drive on HV. One thing I did not pay much attention to and did not keep record is the DTE (distance to empty) displayed immediately after the fill-up. In 48 times fill-ups, I only kept 6 records of DTE.

What is your DTE showing immediately after the fill up? I know some of you fill up so infrequently or never fill up the tank. But if and when you do, please report here.

What we know is that for PRIME's DTE, battery charge and EV range is not included into the estimation. If you drive all on EV mode, and never on HV, then DTE distance will not change. If you fill a tank when your battery is empty, and then you charge the battery full, you will not gain ~30 miles of EV range onto the DTE. It is strictly based on HV mode drive only. The initial estimate of the DTE after fill-up must be based on the mpg for the previous tank. Since it is the estimation of the distance to the low fuel light, which comes on when you have ~2 gal of fuel still left in the tank. The amount of gas used for the estimation of DTE must be ~9.3 gal.

Would that mean, if I am getting 574 miles on DTE after fill-up, was my previous tank's strictly HV only mileage, 61.7mpg (574/9.3)?

The DTE after my last gas stop was 526 miles. However, I was using grocery points discount on the pump and the pump reached a limit before completely filling up the tank. I had another car that took 16.4 gallons, leaving only 8.6 gallons for the PRIME. It was close, but I probably could have pumped another half gallon to a full.

I initially thought that DTE always reported the same number too, but evidently, they are fairly sensitive to some factor which I think is the real HV only mpg from the most recent tank. For my 6 records I have kept, they range from low of 526 to high of 574 all during warm months this year between Jun to Oct. I don't know what the number is like in winter, but I guess it goes down below 500.

Interesting question... I don’t often think about DTE, but I can definitely say that my P.Prime’s tank, on the average, tends to sit at around a quarter tank. That, while I drive 40-45ish miles per day almost entirely on electric.

Excluding tanking up for road trips, which are almost always Austin->Houston->Austin to go see my mom, I typically go to the gas station once every 2-3 months, whereupon I put in 2-3 gallons.

sounds exactly like me, except the daily ev is proportionally smaller relative to battery size

I got my Prime in August 2018 and have filled up 15 times so far.

I am using an app to keep track my fill up and distance driven as the old ways when driving an ICE. I drive 82kms or 51 miles M-F work distance.

I have never driven down to zero after it lights up for gas. The most I got so far is 39.32L or 10.39 gallons.

I have never recorded the total kms that I can achieve after a fill up but on average I have noticed I can get 850-874kms or 531-546 miles.

Base on my app, I am achieving 1.72L/100kms or 137mpg. (combination of EV +HV).

If my DTE shows 850kms and if I want to drive in HV mode all the way, I am sure the EV regen will play some roles for that 850kms and it also depends how hard you step on that pedal

AFAIK, the DTE displayed on the dash is solely based on your HV mode drive. It does not include any of EV drive you do or EV range you may add after charging. I learned this from @jerrymildred.

The distance shown on DTE is nowhere close to the ACTUAL range you can achieve from full tank of gas in PRIME. It is much shorter. My interest is to find out what others are seeing after filling up the tank how many miles the DTE is displaying and how variable this numbers are from fill-up to fill-up. My guess is this number is related to actual gas only mpg on HV drive you did on last tank of gas, but I am not sure of that.

that is interesting. both my pip and hycam are spot on, not counting the reserve gas.

what was your previous prius like?

I don't know. I never paid attention to DTE on my Gen3. I have zero record out of total 78 fill-ups, though I have every fill-up recorded with miles driven and gallons filled.

Just looked at my old record. The longest I drove on my Gen3 on a full tank was 552 miles. I know in Gen3 forum there are plenty of people who have done over 800 miles on a single tank. I really doubt their DTE was showing over 800 miles after a fill-up. And you are correct that DTE is not to the tank EMPTY, rather it is to the EMPTY LIGHT ON. People who reports 800 miles on a single tank are driving way beyond the empty light. That sure is one reason DTE is never close to the actual range.

You are right. Then during HV mode, it is based on how hard to step on the gas pedal burning fuels. To fully achieve the estimated 850kms as an example is based on driving in the ECO range or lower and also drive past beyond the empty light with guts for not being stranded

I'm in this category as I've filled up a grand total of *checks my records* twice since Feb 2019. I've switched to tracking mi/kWh rather than mpg as once it passed 250 mpg, it seemed a bit meaningless.

I’ve only filled up once since I’ve owned my 2017 with 11,600 miles on it and forgot to check my DTE. Might have to fill again by the end of the year. I’ll check the DTE then, if I can remember .

Just remember that to fill with gas, it is the little access door on the LEFT side of the car. There's also that gas door release button somewhere on the lower dash - but I forget where, exactly. ;)

Just filled up last night with 38.76L/10.23G and the DTE showed 913kms/571miles.

I didn't have the guts to run with the fuel light on any longer but based on the fill up, I should assume I would have got a 100+ kms left :cautious:

Yeah, you still had ~1gal in your tank. What I want on the DTE counter is to count negative miles after it reaches zero showing "--- miles" on display. That way I know how far I run after DTE has reached zero. I have driven my PRIME ~100 miles after the empty gas light came on once, but still only took ~10.3gal to fill.

My longest tank on a road trip was 604 miles. I was long past zero, but didn't think to take note of the odometer when that happened.

As to the title question, I guess I should get gas this afternoon. I'll make note of it then. I have a road trip with a friend tomorrow over to Kennedy Space Center and back and I think the tank is a little too low to make the trip comfortably as it is. If I wasn't needing to get there and back quickly, I wouldn't have minded stopping for gas on the way, but we want to maximize our tourist time and minimize our driving time.

Just filled the tank. It was showing 512 miles on DTE this time. Much shorter than summer time high of 574 miles.
