More background on this becouse I just was reminded that I toped off the oil just before the symptoms started. So I'm figuring the ring blow by is forcing oil into throttle body then getting pulled into pistons causing misfire at startup untill the oil is cleared.

So fix would then be ring job and mide as well pop new in bearings and maybe new timing chain. Maybe lap the valves as long as head is off. Along with makeing all things clean on way back together.

Woohoo haven't done a rebuild in years.

Unfortunate for these cars. The days of Toyota reliability vs corporate dollars are what surely brought Toyota to BMW. Goid luck with the rebuild. My 2011 started knocking then dealer said HG. Coolant in cyc 1 and 2. What a shame.

Again, it's pretty much the norm, though hardly good, to see a bit of a swamp below the throttle body, unless you have an Oil Catch Can installed.

The Toyota Technical Service Bulletins for excessive oil consumption, have some info on piston/ring rebuild:

    Hardly good indeed.

I do know someone who is useing 1 qt every 1k miles due to rings.

I'm still not sure what's wrong but going ahead with ring job.

Will be cleaning EGR and installing new injectors and ignition coils.

    Thanks for PDFs.

I briefly looked through them and I was planning on doing all that.

Looking through these it seems that wear on wrist pinbushing might be cause of ring failure.
I can't seem to find anyone with new wrist pin retainers

Ok thoroughly confused on what tools needed to take crankshaft main caps and connecting rods off.

Document says SST 09205-16011 ah yeah put that in Google you get images of a socket yeah cool go to site it's male 12pt torx.

I know my head bolts are recessed torx.

How does damage to a wrist pin bushing cause damage to the rings? Does the piston get stuck at a bad angle? There are oil sprayers throwing oil on the bottoms of the piston - wouldn't that prevent a wrist pin seizure?

    Pixel XL ?

The wrist pin keeps the Piston from improper twisting during combustion. Improper twisting puts improper pressure onto the rings leading to ring and possible cylinder wear. Thus increased blowbye and oil leakage past the oil rings which then makes the compression rings even less efficient.

In the fix they replace the Piston. I would assume it has at least a slightly different shape more conducive to put even pressure on the wrist pin and bushing.

I'm gonna go with 12 point 12mm female socket. Most likely will be correct. I did send the other post asking. Screenshot_20191007-121530.jpeg
