The 2020 Prime is "base" model I think? The two 2019 Prius are both AWD, both Tech, and yet about 2 grand difference, not sure what's up with that. Canadian dollars.

TOYOTA Australia still have refused to bring in PRIME - but without subsidies a 5 door PRIME isn't likely to boost PRIUS numbers much - maybe a few early adopters or PRIUS owners.

 

So you're thinking one of the (pictured) Prius AWD has the advanced package, just inferring from the price bump. Not clear in the ad, but yeah that has to be it.

I imagine they would most likely sell it under the “Prius PHV” badge, since “Prius Prime” is a North American name...

 

They're still ramping up Hybrids. Supply is still an issue - RAV4 has been out for a few months now, and hybrid RAVs are still not to be seen in dealerships (demos, not for sale generally) - about 3-6 months from order date is what they're telling us. Corolla has had supply issues with some hybrids too. PRIUS is basically a non-event here now, priced out of the market. When I bought Samantha, it was similar price to a fully "loaded" equivalent sized hatch - but today, they've come down relatively in price, with more equipment than PRIUS had 3½ years ago.

And, with no subsidies, PRIME is likely to cost another $5,000 than PRIUS which is expensive anyway ($40,023 driveaway for the base model, $48,143 for iTech model). Add $5000 to those prices, and you're getting into lower Prestige car classes. SUVs are king here nowdays, as well as lumping-big twin-cab trucks - for some strange reason, a hatch or wagon makes a better car.

Maybe when they've saturated the Hybrid demand, they might sneak PRIME in - but as I say, at the price, I can't see them making much impact. Additionally, with our very expensive electricity, there's little attraction from a $$$ perspective.

 

What are gas (petrol) prices like nowadays? Admittedly, I’ve only been to Australia (the Sydney vicinity — Camden) once, back in the late 80s.

 

@alanclarkeau all your prices are in US dollars? I suspect yes.

 

Those buggers did some fancy footwork with the documentation charge with us: first print out said "included", second was something like $290. I raised heck.

Maybe something like that, or wheel locks, whatever.

 

No - Aussie Dollars - I don't think my dealer would appreciate it if I fronted up with United States Dollars - or €€ or ££.

Wow, looks to be around US$4.40 per US gallon! Here in Austin TX, we’re currently seeing around $2.40/gallon.

Household electricity in our case runs somewhere around 13c per KWh. It’s a tiered system, so the more you use, the higher the rate you pay. So, right now in particular it’s probably cumulatively a little more — perhaps 16c/KWh or so — since we’re running the house air conditioner quite a bit. But considerably less in the Winter.

Driving our ‘Prime on gas runs somewhere around 4c/mile. Charging from home runs around 2.5c/mile. Austin Energy has an awesome “Plug In EVerywhere” program where, for about $1/week, we can charge all we want around town, including at my workplace. Charging thus, it works out to around 1/3 to 1/2 a cent per mile. And even better, not wearing down the engine. Yeehah!

 

Yup, plus Toyota Canada slashed the financing rates recently as well. They were advertising 3.99 or 4.49% for 60mo financing since the 2020 came out, but they just chopped it to 1.49%. Nice.

 

Electricity is between 19.25 to 32.91 cents per kWh (time of day) - there might be cheaper plans around - but they often have higher daily connection fees.
