Fob is not working

    I got the YellowTop from pep boys two years ago on special for $130 (down from like $180)so that seems like a lot!

    I think from a dealer, $180 sounds about right, plus a service (~$80??) - and they fitted the battery …that can be a problem if you're a first-timer (…see some of the threads hereabouts! :rolleyes:)

    What sometimes happens with the fob is that the rubber jams at least one switch. With the switch on most of the time, the fob battery wears out in no time at all. You'll know if it's the Alarm switch, but if it's one of the others, none of them will work. Like pressing two buttons at once, or approaching the car with a button already pressed.

    Solution is to get the rubber out of the way, either by minor surgery or total replacement. A replacement case should be good for another 10 years or so.

    Anything over 12V is fine. As for the hybrid battery, most every warning light on the dash comes ON. The hybrid battery typically lasts about 10 years. It dies mostly from time and temperature, much less from mileage. Time to start planning for replacing it. Cost is anywhere from $400 to $5000, depending on who does the work. I like NewPriusBatteries.com at $1600, plus installation by an independent mechanic. Dealers vary all over - there may actually be an honest one somewhere.

    Just did. 36 months, purchased August 2017 so there's hope. Going to take to PetBoys this week (where I got battery) for them to do a proper load test. I ran the car's diagnostics menu and it came up as 12.0 (11.3 when I turned in headlights) which isn't great but it isn't totally awful either.

    When I ran the diagnostic service menu battery came in at 12.0...going to have it load tested this week.

    12v on the service menu means the battery is most likely good. There's a load on it and it's still registering 12v or higher.

    Interesting. I've had others say that it should read 12.5 (the 12 was with no accessories on, with headlights on it read 11.3). Haven't had it load tested yet.

    Dropping to 11.3 is a bit extreme. Maybe you should charge it and then load test it.

    I've had no problem with 11.8. I wouldn't try that in a cold climate, but my area is moderate enough that it worked. A car that isn't used much may not keep a weak battery up enough, but would work with a maintenance charger attached when it's parked.
