Creaking coming from trunk

    I've started noticing a creaking noise coming from the left side of the trunk/hatch area when turning. It's getting louder as time goes on. It's at the point where it's annoying now but I can't figure out exactly where it's coming from since it happens only when driving. Any ideas or experience others have had?

    Interesting... I at least haven’t heard anything along those lines. Warranty claim time?

    mine had that problem and I tried putting velcro and foam on the hatch stopper/bumper and other areas that might cause the rattling noise but it didn't work. Then I went to dealer and they confirmed the noise and replaced the rear shocks. So far the noise is gone.

    Back in the days of metal hubcaps can steel wheels, they could creak if not seated all the way. I don't know if these floppy plastic ones on cast wheels would do that, but it only takes a second to check it.

    Yes, I was at 28k+ miles so still within the warranty.

    License plate? I had to get special frames to act as a spacer because the screws wouldn’t tighten enough. Mine still rattles a bit.

    You can put soft rubber washers between the plate and the car body. These separate the plate from the body and will also help the screws engage completely (they move the head of the screw out and can prevent the screws bottoming).

    In my experience with other cars, creaks and groans were usually something in the suspension.

    Thanks! I have a feeling this might be it. Though I tried to take off that rubber stop but that bolt has been tightened quite a lot. Couldn't even move it without fear of breaking my tool.

    Ok so I took it to the dealership.
    They said it was the driver side rear shock absorber and that they'll replace it under warranty. I have a feeling it's both that and the rear hatch rubber bump stop as well. We'll see when I pick up tomorrow.

    However the guy also said the cabin air filter is dirty and needs replacing. Car is 18 months old. Sound reasonable?! Granted, I do only drive in LA...should I shell out for their OEM filter $70 or get my own?

    Google it to see a video of how easy it is to replace. It is located behind the glove box. Rock Auto sells about ten different brands from less than $5. to a maximum of $35. A simple DIY job.

    That’s a steep charge for convenience. The Toyota filter (now part number 87139-0R030) has a list price of $21.20, and it’s sold online for $15 or so. If the dealer is otherwise helpful, you could buy the new filter at their parts counter. As @Washingtonian kindly points out, the replacement procedure is not difficult.

    Thanks for this information! Seems like it's $14.11 at the moment here. [EDIT] Guy said it's $30 to purchase at dealership.

    But I'm confused - there is 87139-28020 and also 87139-58010 which look the same as well but different prices...

    I also have some surface scratches on my windshield (couple inch diameter area) - anyone have any experience if the dealership will be kind to take care of this or should I just go out and purchase my own kit and do it myself?

    OEM filter was $20 at one dealer. YMMV. The auto part stores also wanted $20 and up. I got the OEM at the dealer since there are 9000 stories of Amazon sending the wrong filters for Primes. The Prime and Gen4 Prius are different filters. If the description at Amazon or eBay say "fits Prime and Prius," then it is the wrong filter.

    Actual Toyota part number is 87139-0R030 for the Prime.

    Replacing it is a 30 second DIY job. I can do it with my eyes closed it's so easy. Don't let a dealer soak you for this.

    According to this site, Filter - Toyota (87139-58010) | Toyota Parts, the first is a pollen filter, and the second is a deodorant one.
    Going to take a wild guess that they are the same, but the second has a carbon layer.
