are there any "exceptions" to the rule? Like here in the US, they don't include in average of the fleet - land barges, 3 ton Transit Vans Etc. Not that there are very many of such vehicles in Japan.

The way PRIUS has gone between Gen 1 -> 2 -> 3 and now -> Gen 4 - they'll be on target for that decrease with PRIUS Gen 7.

 

Many cars in Japan are already hybrids, and the the target efficiency is likely based on the JC08 test, which is very easy. 24.5km/L is nearly 60mpg. The Prius already beats that. The Crown hybrid gets 55mpg on that test. The ICE Civic is at 45.6mpg.

Unless they sell a fair number of FSPs there, reaching that target shouldn't be a problem without needing many plug ins.

Lofty goal, Is honda Japan making the same vehicles as they sell here in the US?
I think it will be interesting to revisit this thread in ten years.

 

I totally agree with this view. Toyota is not sweating on this mandate for sure.

 

Electrify also includes hybrids without a plug. Mild hybrids even count.

The hybrid Jazz/Fit has been out nearly as long as the Aqua/Prius c. I'm sure Honda has hybrid versions of models we don't see here. The Accord hybrid was available in Japan the years it was 'paused' for the US. A CR-V hybrid using the Insight drive train is in the works.

Japan is likely doing thia due to lack of fossil fuels in Japan, and lack of electricity, so they are worried about the vulnerablility of their Country, as opposed to USA rationale to satistfy poitical demands of what people/interest groups prefer here. The latter case is more divisive. Also Japan has no problem with hybrids, USA we are trying to force plug-ins over ICE hybrids for political preference reasons.

 

Hybrids are a pretty well established technology at this point. Taking extra steps to support them beyond fuel economy and emission standards would like taking extra steps to support diesel.

 

From an economists point of view I'd have to agree.
From an environmental point of view here in the USA, if there is such an animal still roaming the planet, anything that reduces the
gals of gasoline produced and burned is a win win.
If either a millennial or z gen, both sound like scripts from crazy land.

 

isn't that amazingly idiotic though? You'd think that all of the pro-military/Hawks would want hybrids & electrics, so we could have tons of extra fuel in case we had to go fight wars or bomb or invade people or whatever. And on the Greenie side, all of the concerns for air, environment, global warming, conservation & such. Win win for everyone's side. Apparently not.
