The problem with OBDII connected devices like the trackers and such is that it simply plugs into the OBD port. Once the kid or his friends figure that out, it is simply unplugged and set in the console for the remainder of the time in the car.

I rode a bike most everywhere when I was a kid and had money from a paper route saved up to buy a car as soon as I got my license. My parents told me early on they would not be buying me a car or paying for insurance. Insurance was required by my parents also as part of the privilege of driving a car.

I know it is a different environment now. News papers are practically a thing of the past and bikes are just toys that get grown out of for most.

 

Just take away driving privileges and/or boot him off your insurance....no need to overcomplicate this.

 

I walked, biked and took county transit buses until i could afford my end of car insurance payment before my parents added me to their policy.

And I still read newspapers and listen to news/politic talk radio on a daily basis, not on an smart device either.

The company I work for uses those OBD data loggers. It emails the bosses when the designated criteria are reached. But they are easily removed. I think the shoe leather express is warranted here.

 

To answer the original question: I’m not aware of a way that wouldn’t create more problems than it solves.

Toyota’s publications don’t say much about it, but I think the engine control module or power management control ECU enforces a limit of 112 MPH (180 km/h)—it won’t allow the hybrid system to accelerate the vehicle beyond this speed. I don’t think this built-in limit could be changed without reverse-engineering and modifying the firmware, however, which wouldn’t be practicable.

I’d hesitate to install a device such as this, which disables the fuel injectors when its 75 MPH limit is reached, since a sudden loss of power at highway speeds could be a serious hazard. Indeed, if a defect in design or manufacturing were likely to cause this behavior, the automaker would be required to do a safety recall.

The usual remedy for this is to compare, as often as necessary, the mileage accumulated on the built-in odometer, the mileage recorded by the device, and the mileage listed on the trip sheets. (Junior would write his entries in full; other drivers could be allowed to record only their starting and ending odometer readings.)

 

Disabling the injectors in gear doesn't hurt the car - whenever a normal car is in gear above 1500 or so RPM and the foot is off the gas, the fuel injectors are already cut off in a mode called DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off). Hitting the rev limiter in a manual car does the same thing. Nothing is harmed.

However in a Prius that would just cut off the engine and make it glide, either in EV mode or in neutral.
