How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

Thank you! It worked for a 2007 Prius, SKS Key. I bought the key off ebay for $150 - New Key from a Toyota Dealership. Local dealership wanted $250 for the key, and $75 to program it.

I acquired my Daughter's 2007 Prius which she bought used a year ago. It only came with one key. Now I just have to find a locksmith to cut the key.

I heard that a car can have a maximum of 5 keys programmed before the dealer has to reset it. You might want to mention that on the instructions for the people that reached the 5 key limit and it doesn't work.

 

Hey, quick question. I know this post is 5 years old but I’m going to be doing this really soon. My master key fob won’t lock or unlock my car. I’ve replaced the battery, checked the 12v battery. Everything is fine, just that won’t work. That’s why I’m getting a new key fob. Will I still be able to do this step and it work properly? Thanks!

 

The short answer is no. You need a fully functioning existing in order to use the "Chicken Dance" to program a new (never been used before not a new to you, but used) key FOB.

 

Not sure if I missed an answer to this problem in the 29 pages of the thread. 2005 Prius. Had a full functioning SKS FOB. Ordered a new FOB and programmed it successfully to start the car if inserted, and lock/ unlock the doors. Now I lost all SKS functionality in BOTH FOBS. I checked the button and everything looks good as far as the car. Is there a reason I lost the SKS functions? More importantly can I fix it without taking it to the dealer?

 

So I bought a silver-labeled remote from Keyless Entry Remote, and have tried the chicken dance. It was almost trivial to follow procedure A and get the key programmed to start the car, but after six tries, I am just not getting the SKS remote stuff in procedure B working. The remote is refurbished - is that why? Does it make sense that I can start the car but not do the SKS? I could not find a new remote at a sane price to save my life, and they supposedly guarantee their keys.

You'll need a seed reset to use a previously paired Gen2 fob. There are Gen3+ fobs available that have been reset (virginized, refurbished, …), but as far as I've seen nobody has figured out how to do that to Gen2 fobs. You've just confirmed that Keyless Entry Remote certainly can't.

 

Yup - it looks like I ordered too fast (sigh). It looks like Toyota new OEM keys on Amazon are about $160, so I guess I will be doing that.

Hey guy! do you a procedure for Prius C 2013 two key reprogram??

 

I got my new fob yesterday, and went out and tried it just now. I muffed part of the instructions and didn't get a lock-unlock confirmation, so I started over. The next attempt JUST WORKED. I would like to say it worked the first time, but the only reason I can't was my fault - easiest thing in the world, really. Thanks again to @usnavystgc for the steps, and all who have contributed! Now I just have to get the physical key cut.

Newbie here doing my first posting. Name is Peter. I have a 2006 Prius with keyless entry which I purchased with 200k recently. Today, I received a "new" fob with black back from an ebay vendor (I ordered it before I appreciated all the intricacies of the 2ndGen fob programming). Tried doing part A of the chicken dance. After getting to the point where the new fob is inserted, the red security/key light flashes forever (left it flashing for 10 minutes each time). Tried the chicken dance five ("5") times and made no progress. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a bad fob?

My goal: use NEW non SKS fob to program that fob to allow engine to start and hopefully lock and unlock doors with keys on remote (merely want a backup key).

Currently, I have one fob with silver colored Toyota logo on back.

Let me know what my next step should be. I think I should return the "new" ebay fob and get a better fob (I guess break-down and buy a Toyota fob.

Alternatively, perhaps I should buy a Toyota SKS fob. Any suggestions on where to buy for best price.

PS Local Toy dealer gave me a price of $238 plus tax for the fob with silver colored Toyota logo on back.

 

Found an original Toyota SKS fob (and uncut key) for $150 on ebay including S&H. Toy part number is 89994-47061. My 2ndGen is a 2006 with SKS.

Can anyone else attest to successfully programming the SKS fob themselves (I hate to pay the dealer for such things).

 

My red anti-theft dash light is NOT remaining on solid (not flashing) after the original fob is removed at the end of step three ("3") of the chicken dance (AKA "Procedure A"). What could be the problem?

PS YT video entitled "Gen 2 Toyota Prius Smart Key Programming (chicken dance) 2004-2009" at approximately 2:03 shows the solid light after completing step three (I am banned from leaving URL links as I am a newbie).

PROCEDURE A
This procedure (steps 1. through 5.) is to be used for both the black and chrome logo key fob. This will program the fob to Start/stop engine while it is inserted into the key port. All new fobs should be programmed for this regardless of logo or SKS functionality

1. Get into the car, close and unlock all doors and ensure the car is off
2. Insert old fob (your fob that currently works) into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on [emphasis added].
4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
5. Remove the new fob and you're done with the START/STOP portion of programming ( if you have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE B don't have SKS, proceed to PROCEDURE C).

 

My red anti-theft dash light came on solid (not flashing) only after I inserted the fob in-and-out as quickly as possible (as described in step 2 of Procedure A).

 

OK, I am now onto Procedure B (in order to program the smartkey lock/unlock functions and also the lock/unlock functions on the SKS fob). I have pasted Procedure B to this posting at the bottom. I have gotten all the way through step 9c twice (but door locks lock-and-unlock-twice)% and ended with step 10 (once by opening the door and second time step 10 was accomplished by placing new fob in the dash-slot). However, the fob does NOT lock or unlock as smartkey. Also does not lock or unlock car doors using fob buttons.

Does anyone have any insight as to why the new fob went through the entire programming procedure (including successful lock/unlock cycle after pressing both lock and unlock buttons on the new fob) without being properly programmed for lock/unlock?

%- in the youtube comments for a YT video on this subject (entitled "Prius 2004 FOB Key Programming") the creator explains the following:
"Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means:
a) it didn't work and you have to try again

Procedure B for programming the smartkey (AKA "SKS") lock/unlock functions* on my new remote.

*- this procedure also programs also the lock/unlock functions on the SKS fob.

Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
--------------------
1. Open the driver door and leave it open with no fob in slot (ensure the driver door is unlocked). Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
Complete step 2 within 5 seconds
2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice.
Complete steps 3. and 4. within 40 seconds of completing step 2.

3. Close and open driver door twice.
4. Insert and remove old fob once.
Complete steps 5., 6., 7. and 8. within 40 seconds of completing step 4.
5. Close and open driver door twice again.
6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Within 3 seconds, the car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once). If it does not cycle the locks, return to step 1. otherwise proceed to step 9.

Steps 9.a. and 9.b. should be started within 40 seconds of completing step 8.
9a: Press and hold the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the OLD/MASTER fob. (a couple of seconds should pass and the locks will cycle once. If you do not get this cycle, it is likely due to a weak CR 2032 battery in your fob. Replace the battery in your old fob and try again).
9b: Press both the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the NEW fob. Hold for about 1.5 seconds (several users have reported it being necessary to execute this step twice, if your first go around does not indicate success, try it again and execute this step twice. Please post what worked in the comments below).
9c: Within three seconds, press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time (a long time being more than a minute) and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. If they do, pls report that on this thread).
9d. - If you need or want to program another "new" fob, repeat steps 9. a. 9.b. and 9.c. for the next new fob. If done programming fobs, proceed to step 10.
10. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put the fob in the slot.

 

Whay worked for me was:
Follow procedure B, even though I don't have the smart fob functionality..

When you get to the add mode proceed as follows:
1.press lock and unlock on the old fob for 1.5 seconds.

2. Press lock and unlock on the new fob for 1.5 seconds

3. press lock and unlock on the new fob for 1.5 seconds a second time,

4. press lock only on the new fob.

Voila!

 

There is a limit on the number of FOBs the car can be programmed to work with. You may have reached the limit. I don't know if the car would refuse to program, or if it will go through the process, and not accept it.

If the car has reached its limit, you will either:
1) Have a dealer wipe the car so it can be reprogrammed with all remotes; or
2) Get the techstream software and do it yourself (I think there are instructions out there on how to do it).

 

I know this post is fairly old, but it seems this is still the most accepted procedure to program a new fob, so I gave it a try. I have a 2007 Prius touring with a smart key fob. I bought a second fob (brand new) with the silver logo on the back. However, I have a problem in procedure A itself. After step 3, the car never goes into programming mode. Instead of the red anti-theft light staying on, it keeps blinking like it normally does when the car is unlocked and the fob is inside the car. I've replaced the batteries in both the fobs (although the new fob doesn't even enter the picture at this stage), and I've tried this three times. No luck. Help?

 

Maybe the maximum of 5 keys are already registered to your car. There is a "delete all keys, except this one" Chicken Dance detailed somewhere on PriusChat, so see if you can search that up. Failing that, you could use Techstream to do it or you could take it to a dealer and ask them to do it.

One other possibility, the brand new key fob isn't. Maybe somebody sold you a used key fob – but in this case you should still be able to do Procedure A.

 

Since I got stuck at step 3 of procedure A, I knew it couldn't have anything to do with my new fob. In the end it was a comment from ydpplqbd above that solved my problem; it turns out step 2 (insert and remove 4 times, then insert once) needs to be done as fast as possible, not languidly like I was doing, with a second's pause between each insertion/removal.

Once that was done, the rest of it (including procedure B) went seamlessly, with one exception. After step 9c (hit lock on the new fob once), the lock/unlock cycle didn't happen, even after several minutes. However, the new fob seems to have the full SKS functionality just like my old fob. So maybe it's OK to not have a lock/unlock cycle after 9c?
