No homelink on a 2020 Prius Prime XLE?

Have never been able to make HomeLink work I think my garage door opener is just too old.

 

I have a Chamberlain Liftmaster (aka Craftsman) opener which has rotating codes, and it works fine with the HomeLink. As I recall, there are two steps: one to tell the HomeLink what brand opener you are using (using a remote for that opener near the Homelink while pressing certain buttons on the Homelink), and the second to pair it with the opener to synchronize the codes.

 

OK, that’s interesting... I haven’t had a chance to investigate that feature much yet, but it would seem like the garage door opener and it’s remote would have to run an exactly identical, synchronized algorithm for choosing codes each time. Meanwhile, Toyota’s Homelink rear-view mirror will always spit out exactly the same code every time you press the button.

 

Apparently, the HomeLink in the car does the right thing with rotating codes, since I have had it work with two different Chamberlain openers that definitely use rotating codes. The opener can deal with several different remotes (independent code sequences), and deals with skipped codes, like if you hit the button on the HomeLink but you are out of range of the opener. The HomeLink is transmit-only, and has no way to know if the opener actually heard it.

 

OK. Hmmm... Do you know that it actually is for-sure rotating codes in that usage?

You know, I actually don't know. The manual for my opener says that if the opener is operated with a non-rolling code transmitter, that the door will operate, but the rolling code functionality will be disabled.

 

Gotcha.

From a security perspective, my take would be that the most important consideration is that no single, fixed code will open the door.

If it requires a different code each time, and that code is effectively impossible to predict, then more likely than not, a thief is going to target your neighbor’s house instead (or at least a different door, be it on your house or your neighbor’s).

 

I couldn't fathom it. Our son had it sorted out in about 10 minutes.

 

We did have the homelink, so it’s setup, but with 4 cars and only 2 remotes, I went with a garmin speak plus dash cam with Alexa and a cheap device made by Garadget hooked up to our older garage door opener. I can either choose to do geofencing (opens and closes based on distance) or by voice command.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that Toyota's XLE is no longer their top of the line? I remember when the Limited trim came out on certain models. They were limited, which meant what it was supposed to mean - only available for a certain number of cars. The package usually had custom features not found on other cars. Stuff like special body treatments, special off road package, special interiors, etc. Now, it's just become XXLE.

Ever since I have discovered these 'keychain' openers, the lack of homelink in our two Prius vehicles doesn't bother me as much.

We bought these and put them on our keychains. Problem solved. Honestly, I never really understood why homelink is such a sought after 'feature'.

 

You are also missing the crucial safety features on the XLE, such as the radars for the blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

HomeLink on my Prius Prime Limited works wonderfully well, with both the new push-colored-button-program garage door opener and the old Multicode dip-switch gate opener.

I also carry two different key-chain remotes I bought from Amazon in my pocket, one for the push-colored-button-program and one for the Multicode, which I use when I'm not in my car. It's a pain to reach them when you're sitting in your car, and HomeLink is by far more convenient than them.

 

I don't miss the homelink mirror. Had it on my 2016 Prius Four and the crossbar in the hatch window put a shadow exactly where headlights from cars behind me hit the light sensor so I had too many long drives blinded by the car behind me. The Prime has a little dip which may help with that but I prefer being able to flip the mirror myself. The greenish tint on the autodimming mirror was also pretty weak.
