    It says 45 km electric range on the European test cycle, which translates to a little over 20 us miles. Anybody willing to, wager whether or not it will be Towing rated?

    It has a trailer in a couple of photos, but tow rating in Europe doesn't mean towing in the US. It might in the US, with the AWD model, if it is an option. The Escape PHEV may not have AWD.

    My main question is whether they will just throw the battery into the back, like the Prime Crosstrek PHEV?

    I know, a cheap shot but so delicious.

    We have different requirements and any RAV4 would be so much from what we need, it isn't even in the running. I'm not faulting those who have different requirements but 'Gosh darn, Andy.'

    There once was a RAV4 battery electric and Toyota dropped it. Now they are trying a plug-in hybrid? Perhaps for a small, growing family but it really has too much competition in the ICE world already. Parents who condemn their kids to a future of a global heat oven by their decisions today.

    If true, that’ll sell well against the Outlander PHEV as it’ll get better hybrid mpg and hopefully more AER due to battery technology improvements. Although the AWD-e will lag behind Mitsubishi’s S-AWC System.

    This is great news if true.

    Any idea how much the hybrid fuel economy improved with the new Atkinson engine that the rest of the world got in the Outlander? I didn't have luck finding the info; kept running into the distorted figure including EV miles.

    Ford is targeting an EV range of 30 miles with the 2020 Escape PHEV, but it doesn't have an AWD option. It and hybrid use liquid cooling for the pack.

    my sons rav4h is pretty big on the outside and pretty small on the inside. it will be interesting to see where they put the battery.
    but is suppose full rollout in the us is years away

    From what I remember, it was similar to the 1st gen RAV4 Hybrid. AER was increased by just a few km from lower loss from electric motors and inverter.

    that's WAY better than Outlander's EV range - purportedly increasing to a paltry 22 miles this year. But CHAdeMO charging in just 20-ish minutes is a nice offset for the Outlander .... despite its unimpresive EPA #'s. Still yea - Ford sounds like it is putting together a nice compromise ride.

    Seeing how the new Rav came out this year, it was very unlikely these spy shots are of a PHEV for the next generation.

    Looks like Australia is reporting a gas consumption figure like the EU, which calculated from driving a set distance, starting with a full charge. The mix of gas and electric miles makes judging the improvement suspect.

    The new drive train also increased the battery capacity a little.

    Reports are 39mpg for the hybrid. Unfortunately, Ford's past behavior will make even EPA certified numbers suspect.

    I think the ESCAPE is a global vehicle this time - and EU and possibly other countries will do their own independent testing - will be interesting to compare. I'm not sure if Australian testing is done if a EURO car has been already tested there?

    The WLTP tests still yield better results than the EPA. That makes doing shifty things easier, as people are less likely to notice.

    Does Australia have their own test, or do they use some one else's?

    Sorry - no, not sure. I think most would be, as standards are different, but with crash-testing, if it's been tested in EURO-NCAP, for Euro cars I don't think they're repeated here. But they still might do them independently with litres/100 & pollution tests, but we still use EURO 5 or EURO6 to define the tests, I think. No idea, sorry.

    When ESCAPE comes out of captivity, we can try comparing the USA, UK and AU results. But then, the equipment might be so different it's not directly comparable.

    What are the chances it uses a 2.0 litre HSD setup instead of the 2.5? (I.e. borrow the setup from the Corolla Hybrid but with the Prime’s battery pack). It’ll save some weight.

    I’d like to see 2x the Prime’s pack in the RAV4 but it’s unlikely because of price and weight. Maybe 1.5x? Or the most likely outcome - the same pack. Which means a paltry 20 miles AER.

    If the only evidence is something masked over on a quarter, I'll keep my excitement in check. Toyota should put out a PHEV Rav, and this could be one, but it could also be a bi-fuel CNG model being tested, FCEv, or just some guy covering up body damage.
