I am looking to buy a used 2011 Prius Five loaded (with tech package it was hard to find) 85k miles, all the service has been done at toyota (I checked on my toyota website). so I'm asking if I should buy the Carmax Warranty? has anyone else experienced problems with their prius and used Maxcare warranty for hybrid cars? I have done my hours of searching and reading this forum about EGR issues and Oil consumption problems. but I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I can clean the EGR, EGR cooler, intake manifold. install an Oil catch can etc.
If you can do that kind of stuff yourself, I say skip the Maxcare. Not that much happens to these cars anyway especially if you do the egr, occ, etc,
Without list price of car, maxcare & what it covered disclosed in the post then there's not enough info to reply with an legit answer. Bought mine from carmax also. Just know that carmax car's are typically listed a few thousand dollar higher than kelly blue book values.
The price of the car is 13,998, Maxcare is what I was really wondering about. Has anyone bought it for their prius and used it? does it cover the battery electric motors? since you bought your Prius at Carmax did you purchase Maxcare? if not....knowing what you know now about the car would you have bought it?
General wisdom for those who are mechanically inclined is not buy the maxcare (or other used car warranties), do most maintenance and repairs yourself, and save the maxcare warranty $$ and use it to fund future repairs (if any) that you cannot do yourself.
The extended warranty won't cover the hybrid battery. That's probably the expensive part needing to be replaced after the car hits its 10th birthday.
The brake booster's pretty expensive too, and there's been a fair number of failures. There's warranty extension program for that, definitely check with dealership and the net.
Thank you guys for all your input, I'm going to skip the Maxcare and just put that money away for a repair fund.
