How much fuel do you guess it burned in that time period?

 

I figure that’s about 1gallon. Hell, on a hot day, why not just leave it running?

 

Maybe skip Park, just hit Power?

 

You have plenty of company on this. Not me (at least for more than a couple minutes), but numerous others have fessed up to it.

At least it wasn't in an enclosed parking garage. And for those who have pulled that trick, at least its ICE-on duty cycle is low, and the emission control system normally works quite well at scrubbing out CO.

 

I *would* have done this a couple times. Except for the Prius blaring all its warnings and beeps at me whenever I try to remove the key from the vehicle when it's on. I'm a bit curious how that doesn't catch your attention?

 

Spare key (on trips) or spouse's key (in jacket or purse) left inside vehicle?

Absent those, the alarms have caught me a few times. But some parking areas could have enough ambient roar to miss that.

 

Another case of I've *almost* done this, but then the Prius Lord comes after me with thunder and beeping when I try to lock the door.

Ah the joys of push button start, if only there were an invention you were forced to actively remove from the car because your house key was attached

 

I tells ya… I really do appreciate the old-school twist key in our Prius c.

I rent “modern” cars all the time but we haven’t yet owned a car with pushbutton start and I’m really not looking forward to it.

 

You don't lock your car when you go into work?
If I open the door, step out and press the lock switch it will lock then unlock.
There is not mistake something didn't go the way I thought it should go.
Then I notice I forget to turn the car off!

 

Have to confess, to setting the parking brake (nothing else, not even Park) then trying to exit the vehicle witout shutdown, more than once.

The alarms woke me up.

There's something to be said for a system that uses physical key-in-slot, and it won't relinquish the key until everything is copacetic. Especially if the car key is on a ring of must-have other keys and fobs.

 

There are several places where I don't lock it at all, or don't lock it until after it is unloaded, so that motion is not fully ingrained.

There are places where that "thunder and beeping" can be out-competed by local ambient noise or highway roar. That includes some workplaces around here.

The later half may work well for folks driving only automatic transmissions, but is much weaker for those of us whose other vehicles are still stick transmissions, which have no alarms or mechanics to force leaving them in a non-rolling state ...

... and where the family farm house and buildings are never locked, I have never even see a key for them. Vehicle keys there are never removed farther than necessary to hush any new-fangled key alarms.

 

I thought the emission control systems were designed to deal with NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) rather than with CO.

I've read recently about people being killed by CO emissions from their non-hybrid "keyless" cars that were left running in the attached garage.

 

NOx and HCs and CO. When we had annual emissions testing here, the reports handed to us covered only HCs and CO, not NOx.

But those are rare now. There used to be so much CO that is was a fairly reliable method of suicide. But not anymore, such attempts typically fail now, and folks have to shift to other methods.

 

We sometime's attend grand kids sporting events in the winter when outside temp is around zero.
I turn all electrical of but the fan on low. Lock the door with the key and go inside for a couple hours and come back to a warm and snow free car. Very small gas usage.

 

Very cool. I got poo poo'd here for leaving vehicle on ready with parking brakes on Park for 10 minutes going into stores. Hope you don't get that back lashing here.

 

This only happened to me once, and it was brief, due to the fact that my car kept "beeping" at me as I left. When I tried to click it to stop beeping, it would just keep beeping. That forced me to go look inside...........and thats when I found out I left it on.
