Somebody with a hearing problem hits the button to stop the engine but actually starts it.
Would an accidental double-tap keep it on?

I was referring to "engine." It doesn't even have an engine, it has a motor.

poorly. They mention they are going 4.5 mph (2 m/s for easier calculation), 700 lbs of frictional force is about 3100 newtons, so they would need to apply 3100x2 = 6200 watts or 6.2 kw to just overcome rolling friction at that speed. It took a lot more power to get going, but as you say you could gear it up enough and accelerate slow enough with a skinny girl with the right bicycle contraption.

I guesstimate 11 kw using slightly different assumptions. A football team on bicycles geared right could probably do it. I believe the strongest man could do something like 2.5 kw for 10 seconds, but we are talking more power to start.

Its a pretty cool demo though, the key here is the trick is railroad tracks to reduce friction, and not attaching a rigid trailer that would rip most trucks appart.

A plug-in truck should be able to tow better and more controlled. The thing ford is demonstrating is that plug-ins can tow, which a lot of people would think a plug-in would be worse at towing because normal hybrids are. I expect the hybrid f150 will have a better tow envelope than its regular gasoline counterpart, but won't get the mileage boost, because it will be tuned to this. With a bev you don't need that 10 speed transmission with a very low gear (in ford its 7.44 x bigger ratio than its 10th gear overdrive for highway cruising).

I still think because of the high energy demands of off roading and towing a phev pick up is a better choice. Tow that train and using my figures even going a constant 4.5 mph on level ground its going to use up 80 kwh of battery in just 33 miles.

Its a prototype that won't be out until at least 2022. I'm sure they just used a standard f150s interior. Maybe it should say on/off.

start/stop .... that's how pre-bankrupt GM justified calling their Malibu a hybrid. Fans didn't bite.

then they slapped the 'hybrid' logo on the side of the car -
I'm sure Ford learned from GM's Shenanigans back over a decade ago. Wouldn't they?

    Semantics.

From NASA's "DICTIONARY OF TECHNICAL TERMS FOR AEROSPACE USE"

    "motor
    See engine."
    "
    engine
A machine or apparatus that converts energy, especially heat energy, into work. Also called motor."

The heat energy part is not universal, numerous other sources don''t have it as a requirement.

    From Merriam-Webster dictionary:

Probably right, semantics, but I'd still have a hard time saying my Bolt has an electric engine.

It's a prototype using off the shelf parts available now.

The Explorer hybrid is rated 5000 pounds for towing, but the Police Interceptor is only 24mpg combined. I don't see the Explorer's official numbers changing much from that.

That will be disappointing if the f series hybrid is that low. 5000 is fine for the explorer and is probably limited by that atkinson normally aspirated 6. I would expect a f-series pick up hybrid to have a turbo engine for torque - either 4 or 6, which that hybrid system can accommodate fine (lincohn aviator uses a turbo 6). I think an atkinson 6 is a fine choice if the suv or truck had more battery power like the aviator phev, but the explorer only has 1.5 kwh - probably only 70% usable so figure 1 kwh usable that will get used up fast if towing or going off road.

Truck loading (including towed loads) is very much dictated by braking capability, both in terms of continuous availability through the powertrain and the friction brakes for stopping. An F-150 is going to be rated similar to the Explorer, though the truck’s longer wheelbase will make it the better tow vehicle, pound-for-pound.
