Prius about to hit 200k, what maintenance things should I look for?

    Besides the standard oil changes...what maintenance things should I look to take care of?

    And the intake manifold...

    1. Have you ever changed the transaxle fluid? Toyota says it's lifetime, but...

    2. Have you ever changed the brake fluid? Toyota USA says nothing, but Toyota Canada says tri-yearly or 48K kms.

    3. Have you done an occasional brake inspection? Not just the "visual" inspection, the full 30K (or tri-yearly) Toyota USA spec'd inspection.

    Assume the plugs and coolant are already changed, per the schedule?

    Also...
    Check the brake pads
    Lubricate the brake caliper sliding pins
    Check the Hybrid fan and clean if needed

    I would be more concerned about the abutment clips than the pins themselves. Rust tends to grow between the pads and the clips, and between the clips and the bracket. This leads to the pads “seizing” in place. The pins are rarely a problem.

    thank you everyone for the quick replies. Going tostop by toyota today to order some transaxle oil, and i'll probably take apart the brakes and see whats up with them, lubricate the sliding pins, check the clips. then i'll work my way from there.

    spark plugs and coolant have both been replaced

    The EGR circuit (valve, cooler, manifold) tends to clog up on these cars. According to some people, cleaning this mess will reduce combustion temperatures and this will make your engine head gasket last longer.

    How about water pump change? 3 Gen Prius tend to water pump fail.

    Both coolants? There are two separate coolant circuits.

    When you buy your car, brand new, the intake manifold, and the EGR circuit, are clean and shiney, with unrestricted air flow. After 200,000 miles they are almost without doubt going to look like the bottom of an old barbecue, royally clogged with a carbon/tar mix.

    When I see it, all I can think is "well that can't be good".

    is this something that should be changed prematurely? my friend's prius just had its water pump replaced after failure. Couldn't I just wait till failure point?

    The pumps can sometimes fail intermittently without setting faults. Some believe this contributes to the head gasket problem.

    cleaning the EGR to prevent the blown head gasket seems straight forward enough, but spending $200+ on a new water pump... hmm do i wanna do this as a preventative..

    Running things to failure is something I avoided in our 2010, so I did replace the pump before it failed;).

    I also replaced the fuel pump and inverter water pump before each of them told me to.

    When things are run to failure, the state the car is in cannot be controlled. So if you’re going down the freeway when it happens, not so good things happen :cool:.

    I prefer to control these types of things:).
