Hybrid Battery Block Numbering ??? Left to Right

    so what way are the hybrid cells or blocks number, from Left to Right or from right to left ??

    and from which way looking at the HV Battery...

    It depends on the car. The Gen 2 are from the right(as installed in car) to left side. The Gen 3 are reverse(left to right).

    So you're basically saying that module #1 is always furthest away from the Battery ECU, wires, sensors, etc.?

    I've seen many post about this question and I always get confused.

    It'd make more sense if module #1 is closest to ECU, etc., But I'm beginning to think what your saying is the right way... Can anyone else in here agree or disagree?

    I am familiar with only Gen 1 and 2.

    Gen 1..Block 1 is closest to the ecu end of the battery
    Gen 2...Block 1 is furthest from the ecu end of the battery.
    I merely disassemble Gen 3 and Gen 4s for parts so I haven't really paid attention to order of blocks in them.


    The info below was posted by @Hybrid Battery Exchange a while back:

    Battery blocks are counted from the module which you attach the negative lead, voltage grows with each block. Voltage at block 1 will be ~16 volts, voltage at block 14 will be ~224 volts.

    Gen 2 and gen 3 are the opposite. Gen 2 uses a long negative lead and a short positive lead, gen 3 uses a short negative lead and a long positive lead.

    If you're working on a Camry or Lexus battery and are confused which block is which just follow the negative lead to block 1.

    I think this is the answer i'm finding also, the 2nd gen is right to left & the 3rd gen is left to right. ....that's crazy

    Left and right are relative. Especially once the battery is removed from the car.
    Also depends which side you are looking at the battery from.

    This is the only video I can find on reconditioning a Prius battery, and the guy says the cells are numbered from right to left


    But on all the forums I see it's labeled left to right. So which is it?

    You have a Gen 2.....
    Module 1 is the furthest from the ecu.
    Module 28 is closest to the ecu
    Block 1 is modules 1 and 2
    Block 14 is modules 27 and 28

    Forget left and right, that is a BS way of looking at it because it is all relative to which side you're looking from.

    There are several different styles of batteries from different Toyota models and years. Using the above info will keep you straight regardless of what battery you're working on. Every module has a (+) or (-) molded into the plastic near each terminal. There are 2 cables which put power (+ and -) to the main relays. Based on HBE's information, wherever the main cable attaches to the (-) is module #1. On a Gen 2, (your 2007), this happens to be at the module furthest from the ECU.

    I like this reply the best because it explains the logic for the numbering system... DC voltage travels in a specific direction and the way that voltage travels is the basis upon which the numbering is based...

    It's a DC high voltage pack, which means the current flows in the same direction always, which is negative to positive... Some say Toyota has broken this rule on some packs, but near as I can tell, where the negative high voltage cable first attaches to the pack is module #1 and the last module, in this case module #20 is where the high voltage cable first comes out of the pack.

    But more important, you need to make a spread sheet of all modules and get as much data on all of them, especially via load testing, so you can find bad modules before they go bad... It's a fool's errand to go after only the bad block that the car's dash lights find without also going after the bad modules that the dash light has yet to find...

    So I recently did a swap of battery modules from my Gen3 to my Gen2. It is telling me block 2 and block 3 are becomes low. How come?

    Possible installation error?
    Here are some places to start your hunt for the problem....
    - check the polarity of the modules. They should be alternating every other module. Make sure you started with negative lead with a negative post of the module
    - check the torque spec of each nut on the module's terminal posts. You didn't just "guess" on tightness did you? You used a proper inch-pound torque wrnech when tightening them, right? 48 inch pounds.Randomly deciding that it feels"kinda tight enough" is not a good way to do things on a high voltage battery.
    - check that none of the terminal posts threads are stripped.
    - check that the voltage sensing wires and wire terminals are not crack or broken.
    - check the pins of the battery computer. make sure they are not corroded or damaged.
