Free weekend for maintenance on 2010 and 2012 priuses (prii?)

    I have a 3 day weekend coming up that I plan to do maintenance on my 2010 prius with 225000 miles (and does not burn oil yet...) and friend's 2012 prius with 110000 miles and burns oil.

    Any recommendations for what should and can be done? I plan to pull them each into a separate bay and do the same things to both one after each other.

    I plan on doing these since they have never been done as far as I know:
    • Clean EGR and EGR cooler
    • Clean intake manifold
    • Add oil catch can
    I am also going to use an engine flush (BG 109 EPR) on both and change the oil. On the one burning oil, I may do 2 flushes to try to get the piston rings cleaned more.

    The trans fluid needs changed on both (2010 done at 190k when I got it, 2012 never done as far as I know).

    Anything else I should do while I am in there?

    110k is close to coolant changes and plugs i think. check the recommended maintenance schedule

    Was EGR tract ever cleaned out previously on the high-mileage one? Let us know how that goes, please. Thanks!

    Trans drain/fill was done on 2010 @ 190k when I bought it. Plan on doing again to both for good measure.

    As far as I know, the EGR was never touched on the high mileage car. I will take pictures of that whole tract.

    I will also do the plugs on both since I am in there.

    I was going to say that spark plugs are pretty obvious. If you take the intake manifold out to clean it and the throttle body, there are some Toyota gaskets you’re supposed to replace, although not everyone does.

    Remember that engine coolant circulates through the EGR cooler.

    Started tonight. Got both coolers off and they are soaking. The 2010 was almost completely clogged, very little fluid went through when I tried to clean initially. Really just little drips. I guess about 95% clogged.
    I bought Main Line cleaner from Walmart that is basically lye (see picture). Much stronger than oxyclean. This stuff had the ends perfectly clean in about 30 minutes. They are both soaking overnight. The 2012 was pretty bad about 70% clogged.

    After a lot of work, both are back together.
    The Instant Power Main Line cleaner really cuts the grease/sludge/carbon.
    The 2010 had an extremely bad caked in area of sludge where the PCV connects to intake (picture attached). 20190720_101320.jpg 20190720_102602.jpg

    Where did you use the lye? Not on anything aluminum, I hope (I'm not sure which parts are aluminum and which are stainless steel).

    I got the concentrated lye at Walmart - 1 gallon. See picture above. It was called Main Line Cleaner Instant Power Main Line Cleaner, 1 Gallon - Walmart.com

    I did not soak any aluminum parts but only the stainless parts which came out sparkling!

    I guess that stuff cleans like oven cleaner. Did you use a pressure washer to rinse it out, or just
    the regular garden how sprayer?

    My pressure washer is down for the count currently so used a garden hose with jet sprayer.

    I'd like to make a recirculating pump that hooks up to one end and continuously flushes the lye solution through the cooler. Maybe even incorporate a filter of some sort. Maybe next time.
