3 gen prius oil capacity 4.4q and 4q refill is recommended on oil change. My first oil change on this 3Gen prius and i believe fill 4.7-4.8q in. I have check the is little above the 2dot of dip stick. Every time i press start button to star the engine and it went in engine mode for 2min and stop. Is it looks normal for you guys? Now, after i drain some oil out.. Do i need to check the intake valves for oil deposit in their on this 3gen prius??
Was this level after an oil change but before the car was run? Don't forget the level will drop once it fill the filter. But there is a little breathing room above the "full" dot indicator. But too much can cause the oil the be thrown around more in the crank case which will lead to it becoming aerated, which isn't good. If you are that concerned about it, you can do one of two things: loosen the drain plug (don't remove) until it starts to trickle out and let it drain for a minute, then tighten it back up. or you can use an oil extractor and run the extraction hose down the dipstick tube to remove the oil. I'd drive it around at the level it is for a few miles, then check the dipstick to see if the oil is aerated. If not, don't worry about it especially since it's gonna go through oil anyway and eventually get down to the proper level. Next time, just slowly add after it has filled the filter and leave it between 1/2 and full. But don't forget to check it to make sure it doesn't consume too much oil. Checking the intake is up to you, but that really doesn't have much to do with the oil change (or higher level of oil) itself. That's from oil particulates passing through the PCV into the intake, which then pools at the bottom...read any additional thread on that topic...But I would ask, how many miles are on your car? If high mileage, then yep do an egr/intake cleaning. Again plenty of threads discussing the procedures on that.
A little bit above the dot is fine. An entire quart over the line is not so good... oil pressure can get too high, blowing seals.
A little over is fine. Probably up to a half quart over doesn't even need to be removed. And if it has a LOT of miles on it, it will tend to "self correct" anyway. The engine behavior on cold start is perfectly normal. It warms the engine up for when it is needed the first time.
First off, thank for anyone for input. No, it was about 1inch above the the 2nd dot and right on 2nd knock of the oil stick. I'm still driving it and need to drain off about 0.4-0.5Q tomorrow. No symptom or sign of abnormal yet. Only everytime, i press start for READY to drive, the engine kick on and run on 2min even the Hybrid battery is full charge.
poly not related. is it hot there? drain it off asap, before you have other issues an inch is not 'a little above'
The distance between the two marks is roughly 1.5", and that corresponds to 1.5 liters (according to Owner's Manual). When I do an oil/filter change I put in 4.2 liters, which translates to 4.4 US quarts. This is the recommended refill in the Owner's Manual, and I've found that works out just about right: if you put in that amount, and check it day or two later, I'll find it ever so slightly below the upper mark. If you did put in 4.7~4.8 quarts, that not a lot of overfill. considering spec is 4.4 quarts, it's 0.3~0.4 overfill, which should show roughly 3/8" above the top mark on dipstick, tops. Which is modest overfill, but not enough to worry about. What I suspect, if the amounts in the last paragraph are accurate, is you might be having trouble reading the dipstick. It tends to draw oil up into the guide tube, and that can mess things up trying to read it. Try this: 1. First, make sure the car's fairly level. 2. Remove the dipstick, wipe it, and wait 5 minutes. 3. Insert the dipstick, push it all the way in, then remove, hold it level, and check it, both sides. The wait will give oil drawn up the guide tube time to drain down, give you a clearer reading.
I'm guessing the bottom mark is roughly as I've marked up, and the overfill is the measurement I marked? That's a pretty zoomed in pic.
When the oil is too full, the oil pressure doesn't get too high, it gets too low. When the oil level in the sump is excessively high, the crankshaft weights can contact the oil and whip it into a froth. Then the air bubbles get pulled up into the oil pump pickup and oil pressure drops.
Medel Leik got good zoon in shot. Here's the picture with marked. Below Red Line is safe level. My oil mark is on those knock marked with BLUE.. about 0.8 - 1inh above REd line. Anyway, i'm going drain it now..
i think you're misinterpreting. the dimple is the full oil level = safe. the bend where you have the red mark is not a part of the measuring system where is the other dimple, there is a high and a low
How do you plan to drain? Back out the drain bolt till it's almost out, then drain at a trickle, till your arm's shaking too much to continue? That always works for me.
They could always just pull the filter cap and then slowly add oil until it’s showing in the range of the marks on the dipstick.
I'm going to back out the drain bolt till I see slow drop by drop out. I'll used a plastic cup to hold those drop till i see 0.5q and I'll check. The Black arrow is dip point.. The Green diagram is how the dipstick positioned
