What states don't penalize hybrids now? Looking for a place to retire.

    Yeah..it is pretty infuriating that some states are taxing *gasoline only* Hybrids. For BEVs I can accept that an argument can be for it...but absolutely not for gas only hybrids. At least some states do make a differentiation ( MN for example ).

    Indiana does a +50 hybrid and +100 electric on the registration.

    So where do PHEVs fit into the picture? PHEVs are kind of a grey area since they can be powered via gasoline and/or external electricity. In fact, I think this is what makes it confusing for many ( including those in government making these laws ) :

    Hybrid = Gasoline only ( i.e. - regular Prius )
    Plugin Hybrid = Gasoline and/or external electricity ( i.e. - Prius Prime )
    BEV = external electricity only ( i.e. - Tesla, etc... )

    I think most here know this...but I can see how government officials could be confused and/or coerced into thinking something different. (y)

    I was wrong, the battery vehicle gets a 150 fee. But I think the difference is can use gas, versus battery only operation/cannot use gasoline at all.

    Well California got stupid and increased registration fees across the board for all vehicles as well as increased gas tax to fix roads and stuff. And we have to smog hybrids, even though it only involves opening and closing the hood during the entire process.

    I think my registration fee has remained the same since I bought mine. I live in CA. I live in a county that does not require smog checks until the vehicle is sold. So at least I don't have to put up with that.

    It is a state requirement, but the state divides up local areas according to conditions.

    Program Areas


    "All areas of California require Smog Check certifications when a specified model-year vehicle changes ownership or is registered for the first time in California. The Smog Check Program divides the state into the following areas:

    Enhanced Areas: These areas do not meet federal or state air quality standards for ozone and carbon monoxide. Biennial Smog Check inspections are required in these areas, ...

    Basic Areas: Basic areas are less polluted then Enhanced Areas; however, due to their marginal air quality, biennial inspections are required. ...

    Change of Ownership Areas: These more rural areas of the state require Smog Check certification only when an affected vehicle changes ownership ..."

    How many states still do smog checks? Minnesota used to do it ( I remember it ). However, they quit doing it a long time ago due to cost, etc...Frankly, as time marches on there seems to be diminishing returns as cars are generally overall much cleaner than then used to be. Or am I missing something?

    For anybody who complains about "replacement" gas taxes on electric vehicles:

    I had better NOT hear you complain about the condition or availability of good roads to drive them ON.
    You NEED to keep paying your part for roads and their maintenance.

    I don't mind paying my part for roads and maintenance. You don't know the other half of California's story: they used funds that was supposed to go to that specific purpose on other stuff, leaving roads and highways in a state of disrepair forcing us to pay more or keep paying for repairs that aren't happening.

    Although related, those are TWO separate and distinct problems.

    If an inept Government forces the owners of "normal" cars to endure higher road taxes, the owners of electric or propane or LNG vehicles should pay more too.

    Instead of an arbitrary “penalty” for buying a fuel efficient hybrid, an across-the-board increase on all registration fees seems like it would make a state more money. I’m sure regular gas vehicles probably outnumber the hybrids and electrics, at least in my state by 5 or even 7 to 1. It seems that would generate more revenue for road improvements to me.

    Besides, there is so much road construction going on here, the joke is that orange barrels are the new state flower.

    intresting here in Slovenia its the oposite our country even gives you some money if you buy new hybrid or EV and even offers loan with low imterest rate

    Most of Europe seems to have a better "handle" on air pollution and finite petroleum resources than the US does.

    They reduce consumption by raising the price with taxes. Don't know where the tax goes but I assume into roads and passenger rail service.

    Yes, they still have passenger trains. Outside of major metro areas. :eek:

    Some random thoughts.

    The poor retired guy who drives maybe 100 miles a year still has to pay $100 for the privilege of owning a hybrid to save a bit of money on his fixed income. I drive maybe 20,000 miles a year so that works out to be only 1/2 cent per mile for me.

    Think how great it would be if you drive in once a year to a 'milage station' and they record your miles driven each year and tax you on that. Fair?

    Funny thing is, it's not the cars that do as much damage as the weather.

    Oh well, we all got to Pay to Play.

    and I don't have to have a front license plate anymore... :)

    I wonder when they will start taxing me for not driving?
    I mean, they will still have to keep the 262,377 miles roads in good condition for the couple times I drive on them anyway.
    The weather will break them up anyway.

    Try looking at registration in Maine you don't have to be a resident.

    I registered a motorcycle once there when registration privileges were suspended in Pennsylvania.
