Source: Tesla vehicle fire in Shanghai caused by single battery module – TechCrunch The Tesla Model S vehicle fire that occurred in Shanghai this past April, prompting international media attention, was caused by a single battery module and is not a system defect, the company said Friday. Tesla provided the update on the cause of the fire in a post Friday on its Weibo social media account. A team of investigators analyzed the battery, vehicle history, software and manufacturing data. The fire was caused by a single battery module at the front of the vehicle, Tesla said. The company has issued a software update that will change battery charge and thermal management settings in Model S sedans and Model X SUVs. . . . Bob Wilson
Huh.. I seem to remember when the original roadster came out they were saying how much engineering went into the battery so that a single bad module would be contained and not cause a runaway fire. Oops? Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Design and manufacturing mistakes happen. Ford had to recall thousands of cars because the wiring harness in the steering wheel was causing fires. For Honda, it was a window switch. They aren't the only manufacturers to have had cars start burning while parked from some type of defect in a common part.
Ford is the global leader in vehicles catching fire. There was the Pinto. My generation Mustang has the same fuel tank location as a Pinto and for extra effect the doors are known to jam shut in a rear end collision. Brake fluid can leak into the cruise control cancel switch and start a fire in many F150s. For reasons I can't fathom that switch is powered when the vehicle is off so people have burned to death sleeping in their bed when their truck catches fire in the garage. I hadn't heard about the writing problem you mention but it doesn't surprise me. Tesla has a long way to go if it wants to catch up with Ford in vehicle fires Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
