Transfer Case and Fuel induction cleaning

A dealer attempt at drumming up business.

How many miles on your Prius? Ever drained and filled the trans fluid?

I’ve used the 44k from BG Products and I think it helps with the fuel injection side of the equation .

I’d ask for specifics from the dealer before proceeding with them.

No Prius has a transfer case, it is a part used in 4WD trucks. Transfer case - Wikipedia

Fuel induction cleaning is very often bad for a Prius, you will see many threads "I decided to clean my throttle body/intake manifold/MAP and now I get codes!" I would never do that unless there were specific codes already.

What this postcard really means is your dealership wants more of your money and they hope you will give it to them. Never go there again, some other dealer/mechanic in your area HAS to be more honest and informed.

"Transfer case"? I heard about that with a 4WD Pilot, had to change the fluid....



They're fishing for business. I got one of those, early into our Prius ownership, they were babbling about propeller shaft or something.

 

Was that because they were trying to keep themselves afloat?

 

Cant' help it, I laughed out loud reading this. I mean people here get recall notices from toyota and they won't even get it done, free also.

Still got half the bottle of hypoid gear oil. That stuff's like maple syrup, just as expensive too. Don't mix 'em up though...

Transfer case is a joke LOL but I had experiences with BG Air Induction Service.

Yes dealer's service department does always try to up-sell extra services at the 30k, 60k major services etc. For the particular dealership I worked at back in the days, service advisors were tagging along 4 wheel alignment and BG air induction cleaning at the "Majors", thus I have done and seen many of these induction system cleanings, including my own old dirty cars.

I brought my AE86 Corolla into the shop on a Saturday, I ran this service back to back (I didn't pay for them ), once completed put a flash light to look, my once filthy throttle body/intake manifold was free of oil, buildups, looked shiny clean as new. I am telling you, it WORKS, BG induction system cleaning does what it advertised to do.

~~~ HOWEVER ~~~, I am not saying you should pay the dealership to get this done because they charge an arm and a leg (maybe a kidney?), while @NutzAboutBolts has already taught us to DIY with his own blood and sweats, filmed the process and went through hours of video editing to tell us it can be done at home. I would just pocket the extra spending that otherwise would go to someone else's timeshare payment.

 

I would just lift off the throttle body, clean both sides with a rag with carb cleaner spritzed on it. No need to even disconnect the coolant lines.
