interesting that after all that work, there was no change in driveability. even MPG was worse than usual today.

That's logical, considering yours was not badly clogged (although it was on it's way there).

Yeah, that's a good sign. Preventative maintenance.

EGR cleaning evangelist pat answer, maybe, but it works for me. (y)

One day of mpg as shown on the dash display is not a reliable indicator of mpg changes; there are a lot of variables that can affect short term mileage. See how it does through a few tanks of fuel on repetitive driving routes.

i understand you, but my commute is very predicable and i'm getting stable MPG readings. it used to be around 55 these days with AC on, but the last 2 days is about 50 (today it was actually 49). now, there is one more variable, my wife drove the car for 1 week before the surgery. she put about 100 miles with the horrible MPG of 40. this is actually typical of her, because she alternates gas and brakes with no idea what gliding is. maybe i should reset the computer disconnecting the 12V battery?

No. The accurate method of measuring mpg is to fill the tank and divide the mileage driven by the amount of fuel consumed.

You don't need to disconnect the battery, just hold town the "trip" button while the "A" and "B" trip readings are on the screen.
