There might be some uses of fossil fuels that are much more difficult to replace that just moving you and your car across town.

Coercion may not be required. From my end, I feel like we're already doing our part when it comes to polluting less with personal transportation choices.

Now what I want is choices for the transportation of STUFF.

If you load 5000 new Toyota Priuseses on the oldest car-carrier ship still afloat and sail from Tokyo to Long Beach, that ship will emit more sulfur-compound pollution in that one trip than all 5000 cars will over their entire driving careers combined.

I really wish some organization involved in high tech databases and stuff-selling would apply their database magic and break this out for me. Product A came here on a 36 year old bunker burner ship and choked 5 people with its smoke. Product B came here on a 4 year old ship set to burn a cleaner and more expensive fuel. Nobody choked. The products are identical, but B costs a little more. Which do you want?

I know that data is available, it just needs to get a job. We should put it to work.

Next year, that ship will be emitting 85.7% less sulfur than today.
Changes in marine fuel sulfur limits will put temporary upward pressure on diesel margins - Today in Energy - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Or better yet, just build them local? Lot of reasons that can't happen though.

Yeah come to think of it, there are a lot of Japanese cars built in North America, just certain models though. I guess practicalities of retooling?

They ship over the ones that we also happen to like. Then they use their USA factories to make "problem solvers." They make the trucks here to get around a 1950s tax that is still on the books, and the biggest cars, the ones that wouldn't fit into Japanese parking spaces.

It probably doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. You either ship the completed product, or you ship the materials to make the completed product, unless every bit of the vehicle is locally sourced. And even that requires shipment, even if at a shorter distance.

At the risk of straying into FHOP: with a name like his he'd be drawing votes from both sides.

Tesla can get you a car to Long Beach. Very little shipping emissions and less driving emissions.
    Seems like an easy decision!
