Finally got the time to install the spin-on external filter! Only took 20 minutes total. 4 bolts! I didn't use the O-rings that came in the package because they weren't as thick as the ones already installed. Very happy to not have to monkey with that plastic housing set up. I have attached photos. I just rolled up on my ramps. Did not have to remove the passenger side tire, although if you want to you can.
Dear Montgomery: Could you provide the brand/model of the adaptor you installed? Were you able to determine if the specifications of the spin-on filter media met the specs of the original cartridge? Do you know if the new spin-on adaptor increased the required volume of oil? Thanks
You can google "15609-0T060" and the bracket will come up. It is a standard Toyota Part so it is not an aftermarket part. Not sure about filter increasing oil volume, but I put in an extra quarter of one quart just to be safe. I will watch dip stick for any changes. Pricing varies as you have to order from a Dealer. I have seen them on ebay and other places, but when it comes to something like this, I'm going to buy from the Dealer. Bracket was $79.80, Union bolt was $11.76 and O-rings were $2.46.
