Plenty of Canadians are having charged conversation about the next car they buy.

“In an Ipsos survey commissioned by Toyota Canada this month, 36 per cent said they’d seriously considered buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle, “including a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fuel cell vehicle” (Toyota doesn’t make a battery electric vehicle yet) – and 52 per cent said they’re likely to buy one in the next five years.

But “electric vehicle” can cover plenty of ground. Let’s look at the different types.

Place your bets - let's see where the sales are in 5 years.

    Talk is cheap.

    I think they're dreaming.

Ah n'mind: the title of that article is seriously stretching the definition:

Even with that, I think it's a long shot.

Funny, not one of the highlighted vehicle types is technically an "electric vehicle".

Along the line of Toyota not making an EV yet, apparently they did at one time. I didn't know that. But I saw one in Estes Park, CO on our recent trip. I've been meaning to ask about it and this reminded me. I wish I could have waited for the owner to show up, but who knows how that would have taken? Can anyone enlighten me on this beasite?

I recall there was a (rare) RAV4 pure-electric; it was in the news in 2010. I was in a dealership in 2010, getting snow tire install on our new purchase: asked a salesman about it: he'd never heard of it.

I think it was a case of someone else making the electric innards. Think that's what's pictured?

Bingo!!! That's exactly it. Thanks. I looked all around it and didn't see a Rav badge on it. Just "EV" or "Electric."

    Interesting article.

This is the second generation RAV4 EV (yep, they made two versions!). This one had a Tesla motor and battery (and says "Powered by Tesla" when you turn the car on).

    • It was produced for the 2012-2014 model year
    • Low Cd of 0.30 (vs. 0.35 for the regular gas RAV4)
    • 0-60 in 8.6 secs (7.0 secs in Sport mode)
    • Top speed: 100mph (sport) or 80mph (normal mode)
    • Maximum output: 154hp
    • Maximum wheel torque: 218lb-ft (normal) or 273 lb-ft (sport)
    • Two charge modes - Standard range and extended range
      • Standard range charges to 35kWh
      • Extended range charges full to 41.8kWh (this is the usable SOC)
      • 113 mile range (using extended mode). 92 miles in standard mode
    • Liquid cooled battery
    • 10kW onboard charger at 92% efficiency
    • 240V/40A will take about 5-6 hours
    • IntelliTouch 8" MFD (It basically looked like an iPad/iPhone... capacitive touchscreen with only one button - Home)
    • LED low beam headlights, DRLs and rear taillights/brakelights
    • Blizzard Pearl, Shoreline Blue and Classic Silver Metallic were the available colours
    • No interior cargo loss due to EV powertrain

    According to the article:
Negatives (of HEV_Hybrids): On the road, you’re rarely getting zero-emissions driving

How close to zero emissions does a hybrid need to get to get off this guy's negatives list? I dare this author to detect or measure any emissions from the tailpipe of a Prius (OK a little CO2). This is part of the dis-information, that they consider infinitessimally small emission from a hybrid ICE to be some kind of fundamental kiss of death. .

Those thoughts also crossed my mind. If that's a negative for a Prius, how much more negative is it for a Jeep?!

depends a little on if the car is a California car (all Toyotas hybrids are CARB as far as I know). But today with the 3-way catalytic muffler, and the ultra low sulfur gasoline in the USA (the only problem with a little sulfur was that it reduced effectvieness of the platinum catalyst) But now that we have near zero gaso sulfur in most of USA, our smog emissions and CO from gaso vehciles has got to be very low.

So that's why zero emissions makes less sense now, since Prius for example, is damn near zero, Today if I see smog (reddish haze) over New York City or something, I am thinking it is from diesels and Pa./Ohio coal plants, not cars. And Calfiornia seems to have shifted their pro-ZEV argument to preventing global climate change, and not their old valid ratonale, which was reducing the Ca. smog issue. And I further assume smog in Ca, is diesels, but I am willing to learn if they think (eg gas station emissions) are a key cause.

Canada may not have reduced gaso sulfur, not sure.

There are plenty of emission sources besides cars.
