As far as we are aware the Gen 3 onward are not being targeted. Your common garden (copycat) criminal may not be aware and try to steal one from a Gen 3, but the criminal gangs roaming about will know the difference. We hope so anyway. Yes I did get another hybrid. A Honda Civic IMA Hybrid. It's a very nice and very refined car. Ultra quiet and great on MPG and very comfortable with every conceivable extra. Boring as hell to drive, but now the niggles have been sorted I can't fault it - BUT it's no Prius. It doesn't even come close IMO. I'd have my Gen 1 Prius back in a heartbeat if the CAT was not so desirable to the scum that steal them. On the plus side I can park the Civic anywhere in the knowledge that it will be still there (unmolested ) when I return, but I still hanker for my old Prius. I'm not familiar with the Outlander unfortunately. Although I have had Mitsubishi cars in the past and they were all bullet proof. Good luck D'Brave.
Two arrested in Erith as part of catalytic converter theft investigation | News Shopper Both men have been released, probably to steal more in the meantime.
Thanks for that Nozzavtr, I read the news report and cringed at the glaring lack of any concrete details. Who were they? Where were they from? Are they our own home grown thieving scum, or are they of the imported self entitled ilk who view the UK populace as trusting, meek and mild to the point of "Dodo Extinction" - so they carry out their crimes with unbridled impunity - safe in the knowledge that our hard put upon (and brutally starved of vital funds) Police Force won't have the means to stop them easily Why were they set free? Orders on high? Deep shame at who they really are, and the fact that their point of origin doesn't fit in with the volatile political state of Brexit at the moment? The mind boggles. To be clear, I feel very sorry for our Law Enforcement Officers - especially those on the ground genuinely holding the Thin Blue Line with a total lack of support from their managers who seem to live in an alternate reality and seemingly, willingly kowtow to the political party in power, willingly selling the great British public down the river for whatever enticements are cynically lobbed their way. I'm aware that the rank and file police officers DO want to "Serve and Protect" every one of us. They are cruelly prevented from doing so by the arrogant politicians who viciously slash their financial budgets and cynically browbeat them into implementing overtly PC rules and regulations while ignoring the humongous elephant going bonkers in delicate China crockery shop. They have my sympathy. And my thanks for trying so hard after all, despite the adversity they regularly have to put up with. If these catalytic converter stealing scum do get away with it unpunished, it's not because the Police don't care..... It'll be because they've been neutered by a selfish and greedy ruling elite so far removed from reality, even the fabled world of La La Land looks down-market to them. No doubt, GDPR no longer allows them to name the criminals (though I accept they're innocent till proven guilty). If they're of the imported variety, then having had their collars felt by The Bill, they've already left the country and more than likely operated under false names, documentation, passports anyway.....same way as they always clone car registration numbers and used them for their Grand Theft CAT scheme. Fingers crossed; TranQ Man and Knockout Girl (Marvel style vigilante superheroes) might still make a late appearance and catch these crooks for us. NUU_M3 ?
mpg is up to 63-64 in the warmer summer months in london now, also switched to shell V-power fuel which has bumped it up over 60mpg. so I can safely say at this point the replacement cat isnt causing a drop in performance. I wanted to get 4x michelin crossclimate tyres from blackcircles but I know as soon as I splash out £350 the thieves will steal my cat again.
That’s great! I’m also getting high mpg here, with my replacement Klarius catalytic converter fitted last December. I filled up on Friday and then did a 39 mile round journey to Heathrow Terminal 4 and back; and was astounded and delighted to 65.2mpg on the MFD - I REALLY wasn’t even trying to consciously hypermile; if I had, chances are I could have achieved about 67.0mpg on that trip. Mind you, the temperatures were above 20c - which is when crazy mpg figures really rise high Anyway, back cruising about during my daily commute, and with a small dip in temps, I’m presently hovering slightly above 64mpg - which in the past has been unheard of for the merry merry month of May in London. So anyone who’s had a non-OEM cat fitted, don’t despair.....chances are it’s just as good as the OEMs - at least in the short term. The good news is you’re unlikely to have your cat nicked again. Truth be told, I do not believe anybody has officially reported having had their non-OEM cat stolen. Literally unheard of, for good reason - it’s literally worthless to them iPad ? Pro
Can you tell if its an OEM or non-OEM ? Also, has anybody got experience of the Toyota catloc- any good?
I presently have a non-OEM catalytic converter installed in my 2008 Prius by my insurance company. However, I don’t use a Toyota type catloc; my protection is a one off custom built system.
I'm afraid I don't have any more info on the perpetrators themselves, as the News Shopper in general has always been sketchy in giving more details. I'm just hoping that they was the ones who have been targeting cars round here and this acts as a deterrent to others to stop doing it. We shall see!
Bad news; I’ve just had a call from a neighbour. His Prius owner friend down the road just had his catalytic converter nicked. Doesn’t even know when exactly it happened. The irony here is that my friend WARNED HIM about these opportunistic thefts from Prius Mark 2 models......but it seems the poor dude didn’t take it seriously . These thieves need taking down. Here’s a thought; Everybody’s actually a winner as a result of this Grand Theft CAT spree.....everybody except......THE VICTIM. Insurance get their money back from raised premiums, the disappearance of your no claims bonus, your highly inflated voluntary (or not) excess, and if you’re really unlucky, writing off your perfectly serviceable ride (which WILL be sold off as scrap, bought cheap, repaired and sold for a premium)....all leaving YOU out of pocket Toyota makes a killing selling their OEM Prius 2nd gen cats to gullible insurance companies, repair companies are quids in with work for towing and installation of replacement CATs.... More V.A.T. for HMRC on every transaction, every inch of the way. Criminality ensues and the economy booms..... And nobody gives a flying foxtrot about the victim Stop the planet......I want to get off...!!!! iPad ? Pro
Looks like the bast@rds have started to target the Auris models now, this was done at my local hospital.
We had the toyota catloc fitted. Since the prius has two cats that's the only one that fits No rattle from our installation.
I must have the only noisy Catloc fitted Prius now! In all fairness I believe its where the chain goes through the mounting bracket, and feel that if I cable tie it to the bracket it'll stop the rattle. Just need to get round to doing it.
Yes Jemca Enfield said they use cable ties to stop it from rattling when I asked them about rattling.
Thanks for that, Jemca Sidcup told me the noise was standard and that I would have to live with it. At least I can sort it myself. One day!
......Jemca Sidcup said that? Doesn’t anybody take pride in proper customer service these days anymore? It’s just all about the money these days, isn’t it? That’s depressing iPhone 6s +
A spotty little Herbert at Jemca Edgware told me any lock they supply and fit would not make any noise at all, and if it did make a noise they would re-fit it until it was silent. He then turned around and gleefully informed me I had the wrong type of Prius for this confounded lock.
A company which markets hybrid vehicles renown for their excellent and quiet HSD propulsion systems is blatantly B*LLSH!TT!NG their very own customer into believing that a badly thought out design enhanced by shoddy workmanship (the latter so called because they couldn't be asked to go the extra mile and make simple modifications to eliminate the noise) is the new normal. I guess a marketing consultant probably suggested that after the mugged customer gets tired of hearing a metallic rattle under his car, he'll throw in the towel and pony up for a new quiet Toyota Hybrid. Our disgrace in the UK is now complete. We customers across the land are now officially browbeaten mugs who will (allegedly from marketing's point of view) willingly purchase and accept any badly built crap shoved upon us and willingly pay a king's ransom for it. Wth?!!! Quiet hybrid vehicle + rattling chain underneath?. How can they even allow this to be sold? Is it too much goodwill for them to purchase a few cheap off the shelf items and eliminate that rattle? THAT would be excellent customer service!! It would show they genuinely cared. The Japanese would NEVER inflict such an abomination upon their own customers. Their CEO would rather commit hara-kiri in public (to atone for the sheer dishonour such an act would bring). Over here, they (our UK dystopian customer service) glibly flog this nonsense to their desperate already robbed customers for a premium and instead of shame or remorse for such brazenly SHODDY goods & service, it's high fives and bonuses all round. UNBE - FRICKING - LIEVABLE.....!!!! p.s. I'd say this grinds my gears, but my Prius doesn't actually have gears to grind. NUU_M3 ?
