Any luck slowing oil burning with a stop leak (lucas, blue devil, bars, etc.)

    I'm using Toyota 0W20 bulk, $4.90 CDN per litre, so far zero consumption.

    I think they're ALL fine, foolish to conflate cost, or color, with quality.

    You have a badly broken sense of logic.
    You have made TWO erroneous assumptions here.

    First, Mobil 1 oil is almost universally highly respected.
    It is just a coincidence that YOU had the problem develop while using it.
    The problem seems to show up on some models regardless of what oil you are using.
    But going longer between changes tends to make matters worse. If you were using Mobil 1 and not changing it often enough, that is YOUR fault.

    Then......your comment about the most expensive being the best is short sighted and very often just plain wrong.
    Especially if the reason it is higher priced has NOTHING to do with the reason that you are buying it.

    I don't go over 3k in between changes. I bring my own oil to shop and they charge $15 or $20 to put it in. People who go to that length typically take good care of their cars. 210k miles on clock and runs pretty much like new.

    Still have about 10 Toyota oil filters in garage and at one point had 5 or 6 jugs of Mobil One full synthetic on the shelf.

    Nothing wrong with Royal Purple it is up there and on par with Mobil One. Seen that Liqui Moly has a nice selection of oils as well:
    LM 1
    LM 2
    LM 3

    I'm sure Mobil One is decent but seeing a lot of products that are probably as good or better. Liqui Moly mentioned above...Royal Purple...
    Red Line
    Shaeffers
    Amsoil

    Et cetera. And sorry but price typically will correlate well with quality. That is true in just about every single product I can think of. Cheap usually = low quality and expensive = good quality.

    2nd review on Redline says it slowed oil burning may switch to that down the road as I'm always up for trying different products. Unfortunately $46/gallon which indicates it is probably a highly respected brand lol.

    You aren't sorry. But you ARE misinformed by your fractured logic.

    There is an "average" price for most any given product made by various suppliers.
    A price way BELOW average almost guarantees something of low quality.
    BUT.....the inverse does NOT necessarily hold true.

    As long as people have mis-conceptions like you do, anybody can produce something cheap and inferior and slap a high price tag on it and make a handsome profit by bilking the public.

    Seafoam is an excellent example.

    I'm done. Now we are getting into the "Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is already made up" territory.

    I'd suspect none of the oils is "cheap and inferior". If the industry regulators are doing their job (and I think they are), all motor oils for sale meet their advertised criteria, and are likely monotonously close. Still, some try to get a leg-up, with flashy bottles, color, "premium" prices; It works, people get sucked in by it.

    Coles Notes version: oil is oil.

    You are extraordinarily confused but maybe we both get a kick out of arguing.

    I'm experimenting on a $2500 Prius (what I estimate i'd get if sold) that has 210k miles that burns oil. I don't care if it caught fire tomorrow I'm just enjoying the experimentation.

    Sorry that I think Red Line, Royal Purple, Liqui Moly, Shaeffers, etc....are PROBABLY better than the OReilleys brand...How insane of me to think that. How illogical can one be to think that these $40 oils are better than the $20 knockoff brand.

    Would it surprise me if the beautiful and amazing and highly reputable-in-the-oil-industry OReilleys brand was better than Red Line? No, it wouldn't.

    But (key word coming----->) PROBABLY the $40 brands mentioned above are better than the OReilleys brand. Not sure why that is such a controversial statement.

    But, in a way, I completely agree with the "oil is oil" thing. Overpaid for a long time for Mobil One (about $30 oil/filter) and then another $20 to install at oil shop.

    As soon as I noticed burning @ 180k-ish I said "I agree with you guys...oil is oil...price don't matter...Mobil One / OReilleys...same difference it is all junk" and I started doing the $25-$30 oil changes (cheapest one's found at oil change shop).

    Then 25k miles later (around 205k miles) I got tired of the oil burning and started to conduct this experiment. Decided I'm not using Mobil One and the only other similarly-priced (possibly also junk) oil was Royal Purple and out of pure coincidence I went with RP.

    I bought a gen2 with 285,000 that burned a quart of oil every 800 miles.

    The problem is buildup on the oil rings causing the burning. This is a well known problem on lots of modern cars, not just Toyotas. Synthetic oil and extended drain intervals recommended then we have all these problems we never had before and wonder why?

    Being a crazy pirate auto shop owner and having nothing to lose I started running synthetic blend oil and adding a quart of non synthetic ATF to the oil.

    I now have 321,000 miles and the car just drove 3000 miles and maybe burned a half quart.

    ATF has high detergent levels and I think it's cleaned out the gunk.....

    Fancy oil won't do anything, and I'm a firm believer that synthetics are a waste of money on a Prius. They don't carry gunk in suspension and just deposit it other places in the engine. Dino oil holds the gunk so it comes out when you drain it.

    Just my .02 YMMV.....

    So that others might obtain the same results, can you please post which dino oils and ATFs you have used for the above protocol?

    Also curious how fast you travel on the freeways? (no need to reply if this isn't an appropriate question)

    Are there many hills or elevation changes that would cause your RPMs to increase?

    Sometimes I use service pro 5w30 blend

    Sometimes I use Valvoline 5w30 dino

    Id use Walmart branded oil in it don't think it matters. Just not full synthetic.

    I've dumped in type F old Ford ATF, Dex 3, again don't think it matters just not synthetic.

    Most of my miles are 50-80 mph

    You have nothing to loose try something but it took 30,000 miles for the ATF to make a difference, so it's hard to get data without 100s of oil burning Prius peeps trying the same thing.

    But my car has reduced it's oil consumption by 400 % so I'm sticking with what I'm doing

    I plan on driving it till it does this then I have an 80,000 mile engine set aside for it, I have a suspicion that I'll make it to 500k on this motor.

    This one burned up all the oil client just kept driving.....

    Not nearly as thick as Lucas. Kinda like a thin honey if my memory serves me correctly. The 1st change I watched oil tech pour it in but wasn't really examining the thickness. The 2nd change I remained in the car.

    I think people are forgetting a few things about your reduced oil consumption. First thing is your using the first 4 quarts (yes I know it’s 3.6. I’m rounding up) plus 1 qt for 5 quarts total. Before you were using 4 quarts plus 4 more quarts for 8 quarts total. The Royal Purple is more per quart but you are using less of it.
    Now let’s talk about your o2 sensors and your cat. Using less oil has to be better for them in the long run, and they ain’t cheap.

    And how many ounces are in the can/bottle ??
    If you are adding that WITH the recommended amount of oil too, then the extra liquid in the crankcase is skewing the results.

    Even the company that makes that over-priced oil doesn't claim that it will help reduce oil usage.
    Maybe you should write them a letter !! :ROFLMAO:

    Nope I'm substituting one quart of engine oil with 1 q of ATF and when I'm done the dipstick is right at the full mark. I would not overfill the car

    I think you got the wrong guy. I never said anything about overfilling. Just if you use more expensive oil but less of it it’s not as expensive as burning it. By the way have you heard of the ignore feature. You click on the offending persons name, say Samspade for instance and there is an ignore button. Pick that and you don’t have to be subjected to any more posts from them ;)

    I mean it is common sense that if it takes around 4 quarts and you pour a bottle of something in then you use a little less than 4 quarts.

    Each time they show me the dipstick and it is to the full level ---- not full + 1 quart lol.

    I would hope they aren't that dumb --- this is something so common sensical that I would feel awkward explaining that to them: "Just so you know, you are adding this container I just handed you and watched you pour in...so please remember that you have to subtract a little from however much oil it calls for".

    The problem is I never started seriously measuring via camera until this experiment. I went to a Valvoline shop only 2,000 miles after changing and they said I was 2.5 quarts low....It was blistering cold and during the winter I knew I was burning severely but I don't have records of exact amount (aside from what the Valvoline guy added there is no "record" of how much I was burning --- but I know it was severe).

    Now I am basically full at 2000 miles. And am close to 2600 miles today but haven't checked yet.

    For round 3 I'll only check @ 2500 and 3000 cause that is where it is really down.
